WotC More info on Baldur's Gate 3 coming February 27 2020

In this brief clip we see some voice acting for Volo and a quote, some motion capture, orchestra, some photography that I'm not sure how it would be used in a video game and lastly a date February 27 2020, which happens to be the date of Pax East. Speculate away.

I think Belgium is a great place to draw inspiration for Baldurs Gate 3! I look forward to additional waffles, better chocolate, excellent WWII museums, and the game being written in two languages.

Also, a peeing statue of a child. Yup. Need to visit Belgium again! Wonderful place even if the Vlaams can be hard to understand.

Actually the game is going to be written in a lot more then 2 languages.

Swen Vincke the CEO of Larian Studios who is developing BG 3 is getting the first Belgian Life Time Achievement Award from the Belgian Video Game Awards. Basically he is why Belgium has a video game industry, he is called the Father of the Belgian video game industry.

BG1 was my favourite RPG about 10 years ago, but I think I'm more stoked for Dark Alliance 3 than BG3? DA were the best hack/slash games, and the new one might be short enough that I can actually finish it.

It may not be playable at Pax, but I think there will be a nice info dump of goodness!

Edit: Most likely gameplay footage!

While I expect it to not suck from a technical perspective, I'm not so sure when it comes to the writing and actual narrative. The Divinity games are very self-aware and self-effacing and really exude a feel of not taking themselves particularly seriously. All well and good of course, but not something I expect of Baldur's Gate. Yeah, of course it's gotta have it's goofy and meta moments just like BG1 & 2....but comparing the overall feel of BG1 & 2 and Divinity....I'm not confident they can pull this off without making it one, long gag.

There's been almost no info about BG3 since the original announcement, and what precious little there was that was even tangentially related....well, their goofy vids do not do anything to allay my feeling that BG3 will be one long Larian-styled tongue-in-cheek gagfest.

Time will tell of course and I'll watch/read the info they release about the game....but at this point there is no excitement or optimism, just skeptical curiosity.

Baldurs Gate did a terrific job of mixing in humor and meta without moving the whole game into camp. Divinity games definitely feel campy. A tricky balance. Honestly though, many D&D stories have trod this line. The history of high drama juxtaposed with goofy humor is saturated in many of the best adventures.

You need light notes to provide contrast to the dark ones.
