More info on ENTERPRISE's new direction... (!!spoiler-thingies!!)

Though I like it if they develop a new storyline, I wonder why it has to be something that has no connection to Startrek history?

They could build up the Romulan War instead of a war against a never-again-mentioned species. But on the other hand, since we never heard about this Enterprise in the Startrek history, we might now see the reasons for it - they left the known space and where lost somewhere deep in uncharted terretories. Even if they rescued Earth, everybody forgot about the threat - it was just one probe - this will happen again at least twice in Federation history (V`ger and the whale-probe. I do not count Nomad, it never reached Earth...)

But, well, we will see what they are doing and if it will be interesting and exciting. I hope so, but I have my doubts...

I just feel they are not using Star Trek history and story line. They seem to be pushing their own agenda and vision without using the tools and backdrop.

They have it in their heads to keep pushing time travel story ideas, why? I will check it out but if story and plot does not improve I don't think I will watch long.

I think they are using time travel, and as a result, possibly parallel universes, to dispense with established continuity and canon. This is because they can be restrictive; viewers and writers alike would be saying: "OK, they have to do this now; they can't do this until then..."

I think this is a good way to go about it. Yeah, I know many fans simply can't get around that, but for me, it's refreshing.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this "course correction". On one hand, it's not moving in the direction that I was hoping for; while on the other hand it has a more focused storyline. I'm sure I'll give it a try for a while, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I did find the comment regarding the ship "retrofitting for war" a bit amussing. Do they have any other ship they can send off to war? The image of just one ship heading off to stop an alien invasion seems a bit funny. I guess we'll see what happens.

Maybe we should think of it not as a continuation of ther Star Trek frachise directly, but rather more akin to the Final Fantasy RPG series. Enterprise has certain elements that connect with other Star Trek series (like Starfleet, warp drive and vulcans) but has no direct story connection.

Well, when you think about it, we don't really know all that much history of the Trek universe. A tidbit here or there, but certainly nothing approaching comprehensive. Why should they be forced to link up to the small number of leads into established Trek, when that's such a small part of what must have happened in that universe's history?

They assumably have quite a fleet, actually. They just have the one that is capable of Warp 5, though. Why else call it Starfleet? :)

My impression is that there is a fairly strong fleet of warships, but, as Mark says, only Enterprise is Warp 5 capable. Even if they have a lot of Warp 4 ships, the difference in speed of just one warp factor could make them really slow compared to Enterprise (just a guess). A good comparison might be to say Starfleet has a lot of World War I era battleships, and Enterprise is the first of the World War II era "Iowa" class.

I'm not a huge Trek fan, but my impression is that the old established Trek pre-history was a lot more interesting than this 'new history' B&B are pushing.

One thing occurred to me recently - TOS 23rd century Trek (& 24th century TNG to a lesser extent) was full of lost, abandoned human colonies, yet B&B's version seems to be one of uninterrupted human expansion & progress that leaves no place for such.

If these failed colonies were established in the 21st (pre-warp) or early 22nd centuries, logically Enterprise would be encountering them a lot, as it's going much deeper than the human 'shell' of the mid 22nd century. Yet - nothing.

http://www.history.navy.mil/birthday.htm

The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775 by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.

I agree, they probably have more ships, but mainly of the "defend the sol system" type. Enterprise could be the first deep-space vessel starfleet got, since warp 5 may be the first speed available to make deep space a less than multiyear trip.

But even if Enterprise was the first and only ship in starfleet, they'd probably still call themselves starfleet, just so they could have ranks and spiffy uniforms and parties.
