well, i'm of the opinion D&D already has too many monsters. 
i tend to use NPCs, a handful of humanoid races, animals, and a few staple critters and that's about it.
however, i'd like to see a bit more at the low end of the scale: less than CR 1 up to CR 1 -- but what i definitely don't need are more humanoid races.
