Most mispronounced monster names

Uh, yeah. That really clears it up. I am going with Chew-2-Lou and if fanboys want to take a swing I will have to be ready.

-Shay :)

I go with K-thoo-loo, myself, and 9 out of 10 people have never corrected me. :)

And risk drawing the attention of Those-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named? Of course they didn't correct you. And I bet you've never heard from #10 again, have you?

According to TSR's own pronunciation guide a while back, it's definitely "boo-lay"

"Sahuagin" is hard to pronounce. It doesn't roll off the tongue very easily.

I had some friends that called Deep Gnomes "snibber-flibbin" because they had clearly given up trying to pronounce "sverf-niblin".

Duergar is often pronounced a variety of ways.

I often pronounce "minotaur" at least two ways, and I think both are actually correct.

Tarrasque is not "TARA-skew". It is "tah-RASK".

Pronouncing Lich as "lick" would likely warrant physical violence from me, or at least scads of disdain and loathing.

Bullette is only mispronounced because people pronounce it the way it should be pronounced. The -ette ending comes to English from French and is properly pronounced like the -et in bullet. I don't know why they insisted on Bullette being pronounced Bool-ay.

Edit: The french would pronounce Bullette roughly like the English pronounce bullet. Now the word bullet in French would be pronounced bool-ay.

That's right. I'd forgotten. It's been too long since I've studied French & my last DM pronounced Boo-lay so much I'd forgotten how I USED to pronounce it. (as saying anything other than boo-lay meant you were refereing to some imaginary creature & lost your action for the round).

I used to call a Bullette Bull-Let, as in Let the Bull. I stressed the break between the 2 syllables more, so I could say Shoot the Bul-let with the Bullet & people would know the difference.

But, Boo-lay does sound more festive. More of a party-monster.

"And the land shark charges you!"

"BOO-LAY!"

I knew of a DM who pronounced "Lich" and "Leak", which lead to this very interesting encounter:

DM: You enter the throne room, there is a leak by the far wall between the braziers.
Player: A leak?
DM: Yes, a leak.
Player: I stick my finger in it.
DM: Uh, okay. It casts Meteor Swarm on you, roll for initiative.

(This was the last time that group played with that DM).

I think the worst one was the one player we had who insisted that the acolytes we were fighting were actually Eye-Cults.

Don't even get me started on the names of some of the MtG monsters! I've been pinged by praj-iddal Sorcerers, and burned by "Shaven Dragons" too many times to count. :D

Lich: "Now I know I put that scroll over by these brassieres. Maybe in this Underwire... YEOWWW!!!"

PC: "I'm sorry but according to my heal check, you have some Prostate Problems. Namely, a lack of one. Sorry if my Adamantine Gauntlets are a bit cold."

You'd meteor swarm too.
