Most Useless Feat

Toughness IS pretty bad, but it's a great utility feat for low level creatures and characters (especially those who will only have 1 encounter, such as a kobold or a warrior).

Actually... the only feat that I don't think I've ever seen put to good use in any game I've played in is mounted combat. I've had plenty OF mounted combat, but the feat itself rarely seems to be remembered or applied.

Oh man, I love Mounted Combat. It lets you ride a quick light warhorse with almost no hp into battle at high levels and not worry about the enemy barbarian cutting your horse in half from under you. With Ride filled up, the horse almost never gets hit.

I've seen a lot of first level fighters take toughness so they could take diehard. That gives them essentially 10 more Hp.

Diehard is the ultimate in sucker feats. I've seen at least threee PCs die because of Diehard.

Yeah, my problem is that when we have mounted combat the mount itself doesn't ever get used for much more than a platform (higher ground +1 to attack rolls against medium creatures) and a faster pace. I just don't think anyone ('cept maybe the DM, and even then it's fairly rare) remembers that a mount is a target too.

I recently played in a game with 2 diehard PCs. They seemed to benefit from it at least one time per session.

That's a serious oversight on everyones part. Often the mount is far easier to hit, and has fewer hit points. Also, after the first 3 or 4 times, It gets very irritating when the mounted BBEG is beat down bad, but is spirited away by his mount (Nightmare, flying creature, whatever) before you can finish him off. We (GM and players alike) have learned the hard way... KILL THE MOUNT!

Heighten spell is useless? Er.

I don't know, being able to up those saves is vital for things like enchantments, and not a bad idea for other spells.

Heck, consider a Blindness spell heightened to 6th level. Essentially +4 on the save DC.
Now EVERYONE is invisible to the target, even if he has See Invisibility...

Combat casting. After very low levels, you are never going to fail a casting defensively roll anyway, and if you're worried about that you're better off taking skill focus (concentration). Combat casting should apply to Concentration checks due to taking damage. They are the only checks which can get to high enough DCs to scare a high level character.

Looks like I'm one of the few who do take toughness. At 1st level it's worth having if you don't have a planned path of feats to take. Its only 3 hp but at 1st that might keep alive a little longer.

The save boosters (Iron Will, Great Fortitude and Lightning Reflexes) are also worth having to compensate for weaknesses. If I'm playing a fighter type, then I want Iron Will to help protect from mind-affects, and if I'm not taking 2 levels in rogue to get evasion (or even if I am) I want Lightning Reflexes.

If you've got a vicious DM, being able to sleep in your mithral full plate is incredibly handy.

I must be a vicious DM then. I'm not letting you sleep in anything more than light armor no matter what feat you take.

Now to keep things on theme....From a DM's perspective, I don't see any useless feats in the core books. I think some of the feats that players see as useless are quite handy to us DMs who want to create specialized NPCs for one or two encounters.
