I picked up Battlefield Vietnam. You can put your own MP3's in the game and listen to them when playing. I took some songs off of CD's I have and put them on my computer. But they are saved as windows media files. and there is no option to switch them to MP3's that I know of. Anyone know how I can convert the files over?

Not without knowing whaat kind of software you have.

Do you have a wave editor of some sort?

Alternatively you could try copying them again except make sure they're saved as mp3's this time (you'll need to use something othere than Windows Media Player for this). If you have a Soundblaster (Live and up), you should have one (Creative Playcenter< check the settings before you copy anything).

Of course someone else will likelyknow of a program you can download to convert them.

I would suggest downloading iTunes and ripping the mp3s using that (making sure to edit the import preferences to encode as mp3 instead of AAC). I would suggest a program to convert the wma files, but I can't think of one that is free.

So I need a program to convert the files. When I tryed to save them to the computer from the CD again, it would not let me change the file type. Thanks.

What you need is LAME (http://lame.sourceforge.net/), perhaps but not necessarily RazorLame (http://www.dors.de/razorlame/), and EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/).

Use EAC to rip your CDs to WAV. You can rip them directly to MP3 but you will suffer som quality losses. Then use LAME to convert the WAV files to MP3s. If you are afraid of the LAME interface, RazorLame is a nice GUI for the program.

There do exist some stupid "one click" programs such as iTunes but they are generally bloated, use really lossy compression techniques and have a boatload of features you don't necessarily need. LAME is 192 KB, EAC is 599 KB. iTunes.. 19 MB. Most people don't understand how incredibly large that is, you can code a real time OS in less...

Windows Media Player does in fact have an option to rip to Mp3 instead of WMA (at least mine does, it's the version that came with XP), its in one of the options menus of the player. WMA is the default format, however.

LAME is good, but I didn't know it was for Windows.

I just suggest iTunes as an all around alternative to WinMediaPlayer.

I looked in my media player options and it did not have any MP3 options for the files.

What version of Windows Media Player?

Were the WMA files actually on the CD, or did you have a "record" program?

As other folk have suggested, the EASIEST way is to download a MP3 encoding program, and use that directly. However, if your CD is copy-protected using one of about half a dozen schemes, you are unable to make a (perfectly legal) MP3 for home use.

If the CD is copy-protected... well, let's cross that bridge when we come to it. (The solution involves spending money--either to buy the music again, or to copy the CD, or to get a 1/8" cable.)
