Or

Just create better spells for high levels.

Well they have a few of them. That's a MAD issue or ones that play nice with weapons.
I would like to see something like as part of attack action cast xyz number of times per day = prof bonus.

Main problem is bonus action and concentration on hunters mark when they made it a key feature of the class.

No.

Rangers dont have great ranger spells for high level for damage

Rangers have great druid spells for high level for damage but not the slots for them.

Ranger's ranger spells for damage are okay and situational. Mostly tied to aoe or control.

Conjure barrage seems fine. AoE avoids hitting allies.
It deals poor damage unless you have a lot of targets.

Situational. Not bad. Situational.

The issue you and others have is you want reliable.

Currently. Ranger doesn't have a high level spell for reliable damage that isn't better on a druid. Ranger at high on levels is mostly casting druid spells and trading lower DC and below tier damage for having a MUCH better Attack/Cantrip action.

Not that ranger is bad. Just that ranger has a bunch of situational spell for many situations. Not mindless smiting.

Yeah they don't get smites. Combined with lvl 12 being a whiff and issues with hunters mark bonus actions that the main issue imho.

Yes, but they lack the slots to scale it. Hence my suggestion to go ranger 9, then druid for slots.

Still, Seel Wind Stike would be great at level 10, but not much damage at level 17.

Unlike Paladin Smites, it's not in addition to their weapon damage. (Destructive Wave is also kind of bad for the same reason).

Honestly, the best fix for ranger would probably be new spells that stacked with Hunter's Mark / weapon attacks.

Be interesting to see new tempest cleric.

Ive only seen destructive wave used on them and 5.0 bards.

Damage spells barely worth upcasting anyway.

I don't think Hunters mark should be your primary buff at all post level 10. It should be a Rangers back up when you lose concentration.

AKA cast X then cast Hunters Mark if you drop concentration on X.

Problem is there aren't that many good spells that are X for for general use. Situational yes. But not general.

Why your best option is either to get your DM to allow a third party spells or multiclass into rogue Druid or fighter. If you want a generalist, bog standard, one note, damage ranger.

It deals poor damage unless you have a lot of targets.

It is a huge AOE and does not hurt freindlies. It is rare that you don't have a lot of targets in it.

Mechanically, I think it is hands down the best 3rd level AOE damage spell, substantially better than Fireball.

The only downside is you don't get it until level 9 and have limited slots for it.

Ranger at high on levels is mostly casting druid spells and trading lower DC and below tier damage for having a MUCH better Attack/Cantrip action.

I've played a lot of high level Rangers and I have the same DC as a Druid of the same level. The spell I am casting the most often is probably Truestrike with a Heavy Crossbow. The leveled spell I am casting most is probably Shield.

Mostly I am going for control spells - Fog Cloud, Summon Fey, Wrathful Smite and damage with an attack action is fine. Not the best in the party but certainly good enough for someone who is not attacking every round.

The Ranger has spell slots though, so you get your spells elsewhere.

As far as a full caster dip for more slots, Bard is the one I like the most, but I would take Cleric before I took Druid (although the last 20th level Ranger I played did have 1 level of Druid in addition to 5 levels of Bard)

I don't think Hunters mark should be your primary buff at all post level 10. It should be a Rangers back up when you lose concentration.

The only reason I cast Hunter's Mark at all is because it is free. It is nice to have for that though.
