MW Weapons of odd materials...

First Post
I was thinking of having my PC craft an adamantite Masterwork sword -- what would the plusses be?

A "normal", say, greatsword, could be made.

Would it be +2 (large adamantite weapon)?

Adding in masterwork, it becomes +3 to hit, +2 damage. Of course, these are the same type of bonuses (enhancment), so they would not stack. Right? So they are both +2. So what is the difference between a MW and non-MW adamantite weapon, other than paying an extra 300 gp for the right to pay 8000 gp for enchantments that are no better than what you've got?

Is their any rule that bonuses from weapon materials stacks with bonuses from weapon quality?

Thas has been discussed a great deal before on these boards. When I have more time I will try to find a good lengthy discussion on it.

My belief is that they do stack. I also believe that it should be very hard to do and only mastersmiths should do it. They should be rare.

Others, and I think there were alot, don't think they stack. Many pages numbers have been quoted before.

Good luck!

An enhancement bonus does not stack with a masterwork bonus. If you make a masterwork adamantite greatsword, it has +2 to hit and damage.

My understanding was that Mitheral and adamantite items were already Masterwork as it takes that skill to even work the mettle and so the bonus was already calculated.

That's a fairly common interpretation. However, I believe it's wrong, based on the following excerpt from the OA online FAQ:

The dastana and chahar-aina each have an armor check penalty of 1. What armor check penalties do masterwork versions of these items have? What armor check penalty would mithral versions of these items have?

The armor check penalty for any item of masterwork armor is lessened by 1. (See page 113 in the Player's Handbook.) A masterwork dastana or chahar-aina has an armor check penalty of 0.

Mithral lessens armor check penalties by 3. (See page 243 in the DUNGEON MASTER's Guide.) The minimum armor check penalty is 0. The reduction for mithral and for masterwork stacks.

(Note that the ACP reduction technically is not any sort of enhancement bonus, so should always stack.)

I have been doing this wrong forever. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, but Greatswords have no Armor Check Penalties, and the +1 "to-hit" bonus for a Masterwork item and the +2 Enhancement bonus for Adamant don't stack.

No, no difference between a Masterwork Adamant Greatsword and a "normal" Adamant one... Just like there's no real difference between normal and Masterwork leather armor! :p

DMG:242 "Weapons and armor fashioned from Adamantine are treated as masterwork items with regard to creation times, but the masterwork quality does not affect the enhancement bonus of weapons or the armor check penalty of armor." (Last sentance in the first paragraph in column 2).

No difference other than a MW Adamantine Greatsword can be magiced and a normal adamantine greatsword cannot.

Also, I don't think the adamantine bonus adds to damage. I think it just adds to tohit.
