My 7th Level Swordmage's head is about to explode.

Fire Shield
Encounter, Minor Action
Whenever a creature makes a melee attack roll against you, it takes 2d6 + your Intelligence modifier fire damage.

You get Resist Fire and Cold too, but the auto-damage combined with Aegis puts the target between a rock and a hard place.
The Compendioum and the Chargen currently list this as an encounter power but Arcane Power has it as a daily utility power. Given that the shield lasts for the rest of the encounter I'm inclined to think that the Arcane Power listing is correct and we'll be seeing errata to the compendium soon.

Yup, but then you're giving up another pretty good ability. Take your pick - avoid a Ranged attack that would have hit you and teleport right next to the guy who shot you; or add your swordmage warding to your F/R/W for the rest of a combat. :)
Yeah, but those abilities are Daily powers, and therefore lose a lot of their appeal for me. I'd rather be moderately awesome in every combat than insanely awesome in a few.
Although, that does bring up a question I've had for a long time regarding Dimensional Dodge. The fluff clearly indicates that your teleportation tomfoolery causes the attack to miss, but that's not mentioned anywhere in the crunch. All it says is that you teleport adjacent to the enemy that hit you (or, since it's an interrupt, is about to hit you). This wouldn't result in the attack missing; it would maybe result in you getting to make an opportunity attack against the attacker, though, now that you're suddenly adjacent to him and he's about to make a ranged attack.
Can anybody explain to me why Dimensional Dodge would cause the triggering ranged attack to miss?

Well, it's a Daily power in Arcane Power... I tend to agree with Trevelyan that it's wrong in the Compendium. If you have an Encounter power that lasts for the whole encounter, it might as well be At-Will... And it's way too good for a level 6 at-will, or even a level 6 Encounter.

Even though it's declared after the attack roll, it gets resolved before the attack roll, just like with Shield. Since you are no longer in the place you were when the enemy attacked you, the attack misses. Effectively, you teleport away right before it would have hit. He's already made the attack, declared the target, and effectively declared where he's aiming, and can't change it after the fact just because you used an Immediate Interrupt.

As long as you're still in range, he can still hit you as far as I know. Ranged powers aren't targeted by square. Of course, if you're not adjacent he's provoking by making a ranged attack...
