My moment(s) of madness - and about Unreliable DMs and their groups

Yep, it's official, you're crazy Merric! :D

On a slightly more serious note, I would be worried about burning out or at least not putting enough effort in to each game if I was running that many games at once.

Having said that, I currently only DM a game once a fortnight and even that is currently on a 4 month hiatus due to the birth of my second child (should be resuming shortly though), so take my comments with a pinch of salt.

As it stands, my fortnight is going to look like this:

1st Thursday evening: Wargames with Randy
1st Friday evening: D&D Greyhawk - self-created adventures
1st Saturday afternoon: Boardgaming
1st Saturday evening: D&D Living Forgotten Realms
1st Sunday afternoon: D&D Adventure Path
1st Sunday evening: Serenity RPG - self-created adventures
1st Monday: sleep (I work parttime and not Mondays)

2nd Thursday evening: Wargames with Randy
2nd Friday evening: Star Wars RPG as a player(!)
2nd Saturday: boardgames
2nd Sunday: sleep

So, I have to create two adventures per fortnight, and I can run pregenerated adventures the rest of the time. I'm very good at preparing pregen adventures, thanks in part to my reading speed. It should be fine. The big difference will be running the Forgotten Realms instead of boardgaming on those Saturday afternoons.

I came to an agreement with the other main DM to split sessions with him; if I can wrangle it, I'll drop back to one session a month or fewer - or act only as an emergency DM.

Cheers!

Why not use the Chaos Scar material for your latest group? It's rather loosely defined with lots of breathing space, you could insert a Delve or an excerpt from another adventure rather easily, and the Keep-article gives you and your co-DM room for roleplaying encounters, too.

And by the way: do your pupils still appear normal or have they transformed into D20's? :)

Thumbs up times a million. This sounds great , Merric!

I definitely get to game more often now than I ever had before (not since high school or college.. have I had this much sheer opportunity).

My schedule is actually

  • Tuesday nights: I host the drow group at my apartment (we're all drow or "slaves of the drow" in an LFR Adventuring company.) 3-4 hours.
  • Wednesday nights: I take the kids to D&D encounters (this week I am the DM, I guess, but that's not always...) It's just an hour.
  • Thursday: Thursday LFR at the local Game shop. I nearly always DM. 3 hours.
  • ...And then sometimes (not every week) I play a saturday or a sunday one-off game.

I think because the games are continuous and in smaller chunks it's easy enough to manage. I'd rather do this than watch TV or whatever. I also get more outdoors time than ever before because my kids and girlfriend and I took up geocaching.
