I always start my wizards (and frequently clerics) with a spear. When you are out of appropriate spells, you can 'safely' aid another to give the fighter +1 to attack or AC. I had a Gnome Fighter who used the Gnomish Pick as his weapon, but you kinda expect that combo... His backstory was that he was a gem miner turned adventurer, boy could he ever appraise!
