My wizard and his flaming Pick

Vorput

First Post
So, our party just recently picked up a +1 flaming Heavy Pick- got it off a bugbear with class levels (nasty bugger).

Anyway, nobody in the party wanted it... even though it's a higher enchantment than many of their weapons- they just felt a heavy pick didn't have enough damage, or didn't fit their flavor, or whatever. We can't sell it, since due to war the economy is kind of falling apart (and we're currently on the run for our lives).

So my diviner 5 (+2 BAB!!) said, eh- what the heck. Taking into account my -1 str, and my -4 non-prof penalty, that gives me a total -3 to hit... for a massive 1d6 damage.

Anyone else have any examples of characters using weapons or items that for all intents and purposes they really shouldn't be using?

You, my friend, just became the coup de grace machine. Have fun with that x4 critical.

My first character was an conjurer with a scythe, but he actually spent the feat for its proficiency.

Demiurge out.

That was my thought as well. Too bad about no Power Attack. Still, alongside a hold person or ray of enfeeblement, that DC 20 + 5d6 Fort save-or-die is pretty sweet.

Unless you have house rules for Ray of should have been a fort save rendering someone helpless with that is very difficult even if the Dm decides the unmovable load does render target helpless.

A character can lift as much as double his or her maximum load off the ground, but he or she can only stagger around with it. While overloaded in this way, the character loses any Dexterity bonus to AC and can move only 5 feet per round (as a full-round action).

I once played a Sorcerer who used a hefty walking stick as a greatclub {Both the DMs he was run under [and I too] rule the greatclub is a simple weapon for those over 13 STR]
from concept...

My 9th level Cleric still runs around using his +1 Longspear he picked up early in the campaign. He likes pointy things, and well, he's grown used to this weapon. He has eschewed better weapons many times. A better poking stick has yet to manifest itself.

Err, shouldn't a war increase the market for magic weapons?
As if!!!

War is for heroes and courage and valor and glory. If you want to look impressive, get a magical two-handed sword or axe or something. If you want to look like a peasant, go with the pick. Hell, if it's wartime, the fact that no one's tried to nick the thing should be proof enough that it's inferior. Like yeah, I'm going to go around waving a pick at the enemy, have them laugh at me and pay out the nose for the privledge. I think I'll just stick to my da's sword thanks. Simple supply and demand buddy! [/removes tongue from cheek]

But hey, if people only knew how good a pick could be. I remember a scout in my game wielding one of those and doing three criticals in a row. The two fighters, the paladin and the cleric looked upon her as if she'd been possessed by a god. Those things can really dish out the damage if you get the pointy end in the right place. :D

Best Regards
Herremann the Wise
