D&D 5E (2014) Necromancy School - Any ideas?

Do we have any news on the Necromancy subclass for the Wizard? I personally hope we get something dealing with more than just Undead. Really focus on the whole issues of life energy and death, etc., as opposed to Undead Minions. Do we know anything?

Don't ask me for sources, but I do remember hearing that necromancy would deal with magic of Life and Death. So I think you may be happy with how it turns out.

I, like Evenglare, think that 5E necromancers will use magic of life and death.

...What?

Okay, okay. Based on the necromancy spells in 5Basic, undead will probably have a significant place in a necromancer's wheelhouse. Finger of death causes the target to die and immediately rise as a zombie under the caster's control, and zombies are back to being neutral evil. Overall, I'd estimate that a necromancer could avoid the use of undeath, I think necromancers are going to be strongly compelled towards evil in this edition.

I just read it as though you said it in perfect deadpan. Saying something obvious in a serious way creates a kind of absurdity.

Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. That's just what I remember reading. I could be completely wrong, or maybe I was remembering about another d20 game. I can see how "don't ask for sources" would be kind of funny, I didn't mean it in that way, more of a "I don't have any sources so take this with a grain of salt" type thing.

No worries; I got a chuckle out of it. Apparently I need to spread XP around before I can give to you again.

I certainy hope it'll keep the focus off of Undead - I feel like it would be a little contradictory to go and say that Animate Undead is typically used by Evil Wizards, then bam, go ahead and make Necromancy Specialists *always* focus on Undead. Someone told me that's what the leaked Alpha PHB had, which had me worried. But alas, guess we'll find out in a little under three weeks.

I saw the thread title and thought:

  • Zombie Tech
  • University of Death
  • Undead Eww

But that's not what we're talking about.

If necromancers are very undead focused, I could see them ending up in the DMG instead of the PH(B).

Thaumaturge.
