One of my coworkers is finishing up a (second) degree in theology and has asked for some help. Some sort of thesis or term paper, I believe. I'm not sure if he's even zeroed in on the specific topic, but I'm supposed to help him gather examples of how D&D is evil.

Could be anything, from the portrayal of magic and divination, to the preponderance of demon-monster creatures, to the way players worship the 6-6-6 dice combination for personal attributes. If you've got some suggestions or examples, he might be able to use them.

(I also agreed to sit in on a prayer session with him so he can help protect me from such malignant sources; if I get enough prayer power, I'll try to spread it around to the rest of you.)

Your input, please...

In my personal experience it has only been the including of Devils in the MM that caused me any problems. One of my friends in grade school was not allowed to play because of the them.

Well, once upon a time, my character was killed.

"BLACKLEAF, NO!" I shouted

But certain people wouldn't have it. They had to kill them...and then I had to die, too...

They called it a suicide, until I turned up on my mother's doorstep. I was reeking of stench from the grave. A red light burned in my eyes.

I had risen as a zombie lord, by the demonic machinations of my DM, who turned Blackleaf into an undead villain with a thirst for revenge!

THERE IS NO FANTASY! It's all real!

Er...I mean....

Uuuuunnnngh! Braaaaaaaains!

(PS: There actually is semi-valid reasoning for thinking D&D is evil, in all honesty. Not that you have to agree with it, but that there is some logic in it, even if it's kinda of a twisted sort. If people wanna hear it, I can voice it.)

I would reply to this with constructive, helpful comments but I don't want to even get near a flame war with it.

(checks name on thread)

Hang on a minute...*grins secretly to self and stops worrying*

You guys have fun with this thread, yeah?

Well the reason D&D is evil is because of one monster. Thats the squirrl. First featured in the First eds monster manual two there were two varieties, The regular Squirrl and the deadly Giant Black Squirrl. Also there is a listing for the carnivorous flying squirrl. we know that all squirrls are evil and the game is built around these evil squirrls, therefore the game must be evil...

Truth be told, this article is a bit dated, making references to 1st edition. Howver, I'm sure that they would find plenty of evil stuff in 3rd ed and the Book of Vile Darkness certainly doesn't help.

Interesting angle, worthy of a followup question:

How has evil been updated in 3rd edition?

I got halfway through the second paragraph and hit "My character even had a name!"...*splutters with giggles* I love reading these things...more comments as I carry on reading...

"For several intense hours, I escaped my beloved grandmother's Alzheimer's disease and my failing nursing grades in college" - grin again. BTW - it's not the story that I'm laughing at, I think being addicted to anything is bad, it's just the tone of the article that always gets me...

"Before long, we moved from simple table play to verbally acting out the scenes" - I have no idea what this means. How can you play the game without verbally acting out the scenes? Pass around bits of paper?

"Not only had I made it back to church, but now I found myself kneeling before the Lord!" - Amen brother!

...OK, I'm going to stop now because someone is going to get offended at me. To make myself clear, I'm not knocking anyones beliefs, or way of coping with problems they have. I think the Christian ideals are excellent, it's just the churches I have a problem with.

I'm having a go at the ridiculous tone of these sort of articles, that basically tie together unconnected events to prove some sort of point that doesn't exist.

Blah....sorry if I've offended anyone, but that article is exactly the kind of thing that winds me up...

Why is D&D evil. IMO, one of the most evil things about D&D is the game is the preponderance of Trolls in every edition of the game. Once hidden away in scarcely read fairy tales, D&D brought trolls out into the open and made them acceptable.

D&D, being the benchmark that it was, led the way but other games soon followed suit. Who can forget the D&D lite game called Tunnels and Trolls way back when. But T&T was not the only one to follow the lead of D&D, other fantasy games marched in lockstep, taking this acceptance of Trolls and incorporating it into their rules and races. And this included not only fantasy games but more modern games like Shadowrun and White Wolf's Changeling. Clearly Trolls are now a norm in the gaming industry. But it is not just RPGs. D&D started us down the slippery slope of Troll acceptance and now it is everywhere you look, from toy stores (who can argue that those neon haired troll mostrosity dolls are not evil) to the internet, people are becoming very casual in their acceptance of trolls.

Clearly it all started with DnD opening up that door, coaxing our children into believing in trolls, accepting trolls, and some of them, shamefully, even wanting to be trolls.
