D&D Movie/TV Netflix Planning Forgotten Realms D&D TV Show With Stranger Things Producer

A Dungeons & Dragons TV show set in the Forgotten Realms is in development at Netflix. Deadline reports that the new TV series, titled The Forgotten Realms, is being produced by Shawn Levy, with Drew Crevello serving as writer and showrunner. No timeframe was given for the show's release. No cast has been announced and neither Hasbro nor Netflix has actually confirmed the project. If successful, the series could launch a wider D&D cinematic universe, long a goal for Hasbro.

Hasbro has tried unsuccessfully to get Dungeons & Dragons to television for several years. At one point, Paramount+ had a TV show in development with Rawson Marshall Thurber writing the pilot. While the project was ultimately scrapped, Crevello (who was set to be showrunner on that version of the show) stayed on the project and redeveloped it with a new concept. According to Deadline, this project is not tied to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, although the movie is set to debut on Netflix this month and is also set in the Forgotten Realms.

Dungeons & Dragons was also featured in an episode of Secret Level, an animated series focused on various game franchises that aired on Amazon Prime. Legendary, meanwhile, is adapting Hasbro's other major fantasy franchise Magic: The Gathering into a movie and TV project.

I would advice Dark Sun as animation for adults. Here Netflix could start from zero with an alternate continuity.

Do you realice? Years ago if a group of geeks were talking about a future adaptation they would be very excited but now we worry about the first season ended with a dammed cliffhanger and after to be cancelled.

Each future season could be a different setting.

Birthright could be perfect for a romantasy serie.

My suggestion is in some episodes to show classes with special mechanics from previous editions: psion, swordsage, totemist shaman.. to test if interest is recovered.

I wouldn't be too surprised if we see an animated spin-off more focused toward the comedy, with some cute characters like gnomes or halflings.

At some point, these guys gotta start reusing stuff. 🤷‍♂️

End of the day, they’ll figure out the cheapest place with the most tax incentives. Eastern Europe? Ireland?

Canada. The Canadian dollar is alot cheaper then the Euro.

Plus we have pretty much you need to make movies here in spades.

Tax credits galore.

High tech studios, forests and lakes and oceans (we got 3 of them).

Most provinces also have English as the dominate language, but with a diverse population.

Toronto is one of the safest cities for a population of its massive size. Same with other major Canada cities.

Ed Greenwood, Chris Perkins, and Shawn Levy are Canadian.

Vancouver probably needs more productions, as people in the industry are complaining how there hasn't been much opportunities since the strikes. I guess Last of Us is winding down or wrapped now, but Avatar the Last Airbender I think is starting up again, but it may be more of a question about the number of smaller productions which provided a lot of jobs rather than a few big ones.

I've heard things have picked up in Vancouver, but only anecdotally from a few people in the industry. The LA fires and aftermath has had a mixed effect. Productions bailed because of the fires but there is pressure to keep business there to help rebuild.

There's always lots of low quality stuff going on here, despite the big name shows that hit the news.
