D&D Movie/TV Netflix Planning Forgotten Realms D&D TV Show With Stranger Things Producer

A Dungeons & Dragons TV show set in the Forgotten Realms is in development at Netflix. Deadline reports that the new TV series, titled The Forgotten Realms, is being produced by Shawn Levy, with Drew Crevello serving as writer and showrunner. No timeframe was given for the show's release. No cast has been announced and neither Hasbro nor Netflix has actually confirmed the project. If successful, the series could launch a wider D&D cinematic universe, long a goal for Hasbro.

Hasbro has tried unsuccessfully to get Dungeons & Dragons to television for several years. At one point, Paramount+ had a TV show in development with Rawson Marshall Thurber writing the pilot. While the project was ultimately scrapped, Crevello (who was set to be showrunner on that version of the show) stayed on the project and redeveloped it with a new concept. According to Deadline, this project is not tied to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, although the movie is set to debut on Netflix this month and is also set in the Forgotten Realms.

Dungeons & Dragons was also featured in an episode of Secret Level, an animated series focused on various game franchises that aired on Amazon Prime. Legendary, meanwhile, is adapting Hasbro's other major fantasy franchise Magic: The Gathering into a movie and TV project.

The choice isn't "sycophant or not."

You're starting out, with zero information, assuming the worst. And making claims like "we've had a few attempts at this" when we've had no attempts at this.

That's not logical. Neutral would make sense. But going in assuming the worst? Not logical.
You don’t like my opinion and that’s fine.
I hope it works out the way everyone wants it to.

We have a lot of evidence suggesting that.

BG3 is exception doesn't have the D&D name on it.

By itself I don't think the D&D name is enough to carry a big budget project.

Might work this time around I wouldn't bet on it.

We have no evidence on this topic. Zero.

Zero to do with a TV show. And he isn't even arguing about the name.

He wasn't even commenting on the name. He's assuming the live action streaming show will fail, and claiming we have had many attempts at that when we've had zero.

Bet on the name? Zard, that's really neither nor there. If the show is good and marketed well it will do well, if it's bad or marketed poorly it will fail, if it's something in between who knows, but the name is pretty meaningless. After all, most TV show names are meaningless. Yellowstone? White Lotus? Come on man, shows are almost entirely about the content and marketing, not the name.

But let's put you on record. Are you going in assuming the worst for the show, or not?

Neither Yellowstone nor White Lotus or most shows came pre loaded with 50 years of “nerd” baggage.
I’m a nerd and I love nerd stuff. My comments are all based on my opinion that it’s possible that the D&D name may be its worst enemy.
It’s all speculation. I have no data (not that kind of nerd) I have no sources and most importantly I have no animosity.

I look forward to seeing if and how it turns out. I welcome anyone who disagrees with me to come back after the fact to tell me how wrong I am and how me in my wrongness …had no impact on anything at all.

We’re just people talking about a thing. No harm no foul.

60/40 negative suppose. More pointing out the various D&D shows and movies haven't set the world on fire. Also been a lot of canceled projects lately.

If its TV or movie related same response. Let's see if it gets made first. That's everything not just D&D.

Nobody cares about that anymore. Nerd titles have dominated the charts for over a decade now. Nerd names broke through that barrier long, long ago now. If it gets good buzz and is good, people will watch. If it doesn't, they won't. The name will not make or break anything. I mean, if "Battlestar Galactica" could do well, given how silly a reputation it had previously, no nerd name has anything to worry about.

Well then I guess we have nothing to worry about.
I’m not as invested in this conversation as you seem to be so I take my leave. Good luck.

If you have good writing, actors, and half-decent special effects you can make a good show in just about any genre, so I see no reason why a series based on D&D can't be good. Even if the D&D brand won't bring all the boys to the yard, there's definitely a broader audience for fantasy material who might check it out. I propose we get Henry Cavill to play the part of Zagyg. Of course Cavill will be replaced in season 3 because he leaves the show when producers decide orcs don't always have to be evil.
