Never heard of them before??

Cute but dangerous
I was going to look up some lyrics for clarification for story hour writing (some of our bards tend to break out in song ;)) and happened across a survey among army folks about the best battle songs. The person doing the article mentioned Manowar songs coming up a lot, but that he had never heard of them before.

I almost fell off my chair. I would think that, even if you generally don't like heavy metal, some band names would at least ring a bell, same as even if you hate classical music you'd know Brahms and Beethoven had something to do with it, or even if you have no clue about science at all, Einstein and Hawking would ring a bell.

Well, I counted Manowar among those bands at least known by name. Obviously not...

What "never heard of them" moments leaving you wondering have you experienced?

Notice you are in Germany, Manowar is fairly popular there, compared to here in the States. While I've heard OF them, they aren't my favorites - and I'm the headmaster of metal school. Maybe that will put things in perspective.

My WHA?? moment was when I heard a younger (teens?) say "Who are the Beatles?" Frankly, that child's parents should be beaten with musical instruments.

I like manowar, but their latest album hasnt piqued my interest.

Pandora has introduced me to Sabaton. Pretty much every song is. Historical war reference.

I need to challenge that with the Board of Directors. ;)

Manowar was never huge in the states. To give you MY perspective, I have more than 5000 CDs, probably a third of that is hard rock & metal, dating back to Black Sabbath and still being added to today.

I own NO Manowar.

Not that they aren't fun to listen to sometimes, but they never appealed to me enough to buy their music.

As for the "Whodat?" question, I was surprised when Dan Quayle said he hadn't heard of Deep Purple.

And as for the Beatles, even Sir Paul has been surprised once D'Or twice. He once said that the first time he felt old was when he was approached by a young fan who was (of course) raving about. How she was his biggest fan of all, and had all of his albums. An impressed Paul, signing an autograph for the young lady, asked, "Oh, really? Even all my Beatles albums?"

Her eyes went saucer-sized as she incredulously replied, "You were in a band before Wings?"

I couldn't name a single Norwegian Black Metal band until I saw a documentary about them, even though I knew and had probably used the phrase "Norwegian Black Metal".

Also, I don't think I've heard of Manowar. Then again, metal's not my thing, despite growing up during the Era of Hair Metal (in New Jersey!).

Back in the early 90s I was DJing a wedding dance one night and when I first set up the equipment I had some music playing to see how it sounded around the room. While "Under Pressure" was playing a young woman came up to me and asked me what son g that was and when I told her she replied "Oh, somebody re-did Vanilla Ice?"

On a side note, I have a co-worker in his mid-forties who claims he hates pop music yet also claims Wings, the Bee Gees and Abba are better than The Beatles. He also claims The Bee Gees were a great band.

And just because I thought everyone would know who Hawking is...

One neighbor in a discussion about science vs religion in school, moving over to the discovery of the Higgs and Hawking losing his bet: "Politicians shouldn't bet to begin with."

Confused other neighbor: "Politicians?" "Well if the guy wants to win the US elections he should focus on his campaign, not betting on what he doesn't understand." Massive groan from everyone else.

Even in Germany, how can you mix up Hawking with Romney.
