New Campaigns

Hello NF. Thanks for stopping by and saying hi. I think I am pretty safe in my preumption that your campaign is set in the SL setting ;). You raised a valid point about introducing characters to the world. I think that is important, however, it seems that with any setting (and this is especially true w/the Scarred Lands) part of the fun is letting players learn how deeadly their world can be. Have you found that starting characters at 5th level, takes away some of the fear and caution they have about adventuring in their world?

Not entirely. Course that's because they are playing in Hollowfaust. :) So they know they'd better mind their manners. Plus being of Good alignment, (at least most of them) makes for an easy sale to believe they will be semi-cautious about most things. After the whipping they took at my mini-boss/mini-villain Thuk the Grim, they might start to be more cautious. Course there's still the matter of Taason's cache hidden in a small cave guarded by "strange things". :)

Nightfall, I haven't used my Hollowfaust yet, but it does look like it provides challenges for PC's of any level. Actually, I was just thinking, Hollowfaust would be a great campain for Epic Characters.

Nope. It depends on the style of campaign.

I'm actually about to start soonish playing in a new Realms campaign starting at level 10...I'll be playing a Druid 6 / Shifter 4. Should be fun :)

Mmm maybe. Again, matter of preference. Personally I'd much rather save Epic level characters for places like Termana, Asherak or the Dragon Lands. :) But hey what ever floats your boat Boney.

I've alway prefured starting at 1st, i just sort of like to start at the beginning and work my way up. To me, unless there's good reason, getting levels for free seems to be a cheat. I like to earn those powers, one step at a time.

Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate the comments, and if anyone has anymore ideas I'd love to hear them. I think I am most confortable w/the 2nd-4th level for starting characters out. I guess in a certain sense it really doesn't matter, because the DM can always make the challenges fit the characters. Similarly, if the campaign was a long one then I don't think a level here or there matters.

Nightfall, don't know if I'll actually do an Epic Level Hollowfaust. It was actually just a thought that popped into my head as I as typing.

Sir Osis, so do you think a DM can cheat? That's an interresting comment to me because IMO, I never thought of a DM's decision as cheating per se. Likewise, it's not something that I have ever really thought about in those terms. "Can a DM cheat?" I mean. I am going to ponder it though.

I started my last campaign at 3rd level. I found that this seriously decreased party cohesion. At the early levels strategy is very important and at the higher levels it is not so important. So starting at the higher levels tends to give the players a run in and kill em approach.
That kind of behavior can be trained away, though. Just be tough enough on them that they can't get away with that without a few PC deaths!

Seriously! I don't really like PC deaths when I DM -- it's disruptive and time consuming and it stops the game temporarily while the player figures out what else he's gonna do. Still, as a DM, I think it more important that a little bit of paranoia and incentive to think strategically are important. I couldn't ever run a game where the run in and kill em approach worked, because it would bore me to tears after a few sessions.

I gotcha Boney. :) But if you REALLY wanted to do that, hey I'd understand.
