New Design article: Elves

I think certain types should be subtypes, and some creatures would just have multiple subtypes in addition to their base type.

Types

Aberration
Animal
Beast/Magical Beast
Dragon
Construct
Humanoid
Ooze
Plant
Vermin

Subtypes

Elemental
Fey
Giant
Monstrous (for monstrous humanoids)
Outsider
Shapechanger
Undead

Thus, things like sylphs would be humanoid (elemental), while "traditional" elementals would be construct (elemental). Devils (with the new lore concerning them) could be humanoid (outsider), while demons would be aberration (outsider), since they are no longer humanoid. Eladrin (as presented in 3rd) could be humanoid (fey, outsider).

I think all types should just be "subtypes." Just take a basic critter ("spirit") and throw on types (incorporeal, undead, fire, evil). Since creatures are getting reworked under the hood, I think type as "pseudo class" is kind of dead anyway. I think types in the new game will be more like flags (for you MUD fans out there), i.e. "IF dragon THEN bane."

Dunno, but I'd love to play an eladrin paladin/wizard... assuming the new multiclassing rules are viable (which admittedly I have no reason to assume at this juncture).
I think they'll be better than what we have currently, I think. And that sounds like a cool character concept, too!
