New Feat: Wishsong (Broken?)

CleverNickName

Limit Break Dancing (He/They)
I got this idea from the "Sword of Shannara" series of novels, written by Terry Brooks. I'm wondering if it is broken.

Wishsong (General)
You were born with the gift of the Wishsong.
Prerequisite: character level 1
Benefit: Perform (sing) is a class skill for you. You gain no other benefit from this feat until you have 17 ranks in Perform (sing), at which time you gain the ability to cast limited wish once per day as a 14th-level sorcerer.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Inflamatory criticism?

It does not emulate the books well. Those people did not have 14 levels to use the Wishsong.

You may want to look through the illusion effects etc and have the feat grant certain spell-like abilities at certain levels.

I would REALLY suggest you look at "Heroric Paths" from Midnight 2e as a better model to handle something such as the Wishsong. The midnight d20 rules would be much better for a Shannara style world.

Any feat that does the power justice will be broken in D&D terms. In the books it was not a balanced ability it was something that made the character unique with greater power. So, I'd choose either to get it right by the book or too make a highly toned down and balanced version. I doubt you can have both.

This feat is in fact broken.

No first level character would take it, but many many 18th level characters would. A limited wish without the xp cost...yes please.

I don't know if it models the novels well.

Of course you know it's straightforwardly overpowered for characters created significantly above 1st level. However, I think it'd be a really cool feat, actually, for campagins played all the way from 1st level to 14th and beyond: for most of your character's life, you play with one less feat than everyone else, but you do it with a sense of heroic destiny--there's something special about you, and you know it, and you're just waiting to really come into your own. (I'm actually delighted with how well a delayed-gratification feat of this sort models that; it's one of the freshest ideas I've seen in a while.)

At 14th level it's a major advantage, but it's probably not really game-breaking, which seems like an okay compromise for having had to put up with a worthless feat up to that point.

Eh, I think it's a good idea, just not well-done (no offense). What you need to do is either make it a class or (my choice) a feat tree.

[sblock=A Few Examples]Ohmsford Heritage
- Character level 1st, Charisma 13+
(You could call it Wishsong Heritage if you're in a different world/setting, but the Ohmsford line are the only ones who can take it otherwise.)
You gain Perform (Sing) as a class skill, and gain a +2 bonus on Perform (Sing) checks.

Wishsong (Least)
- Perform (Sing) 6 ranks, Ohmsford Heritage
As a full-round action, make a Perform (Sing) check, DC 18. If you succeed, you may create any one effect from the Prestidigitation spell.

Wishsong (Lesser Illusion)
- Perform (Sing) 6 ranks, Ohmsford Heritage, Wishsong
As a standard action, make a Perform (Sing) check, DC 20. If you succeed, you may cast either Dancing Lights or Ghost Sound. you may only have one such spell in effect at any one time, and the duration is changed to Concentration. You must continue singing to maintain the effect.

Wishsong (Lesser Charm)
- Perform (Sing) 9 ranks, Ohmsford Heritage, Wishsong
As a swift action, you may add a resonance or soft humming to your speech. Make a Perform (Sing) check, DC 15. If you succeed, you giana +2 bonus to all Diplomacy and Intimidate checks made as long as you continue to maintain the effect. The bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks increases by +1 per 5 points by which you beat the Perform DC.[/sblock]

These are just some basic ideas. It'd take a lot more work to come up with the whole system, though. it would also work best if you allow the Expert generic class, so you can use those bonus feats to gain the whole tree, to better represent all of the abilities.

Oddly enough, I've been having the urge to run an evil game set in Jarka Ruus lately...
