New Greyhawk Hardcover

One thing I miss about TSR and favor over WotC...
Bring back the boxed campaign set... Who cares if the thing is hardcover - I would prefer a box with two or three separate maps that fold out (not a rip it out and ruin it and the book piece o crap like is included in the current books). Separate soft cover books for players and DMs so that the player's have the "truth as they know it" and the DM has the "real truth".

Personally, I could care less what new hardcover campaign book comes out - I REFUSE to buy a hardcover campaign book! They are useless and unwieldy and frankly have too much crunch and not enough fluff - and that is what a campaign resource book really is, fluff!

Thunderfoot,

Well maybe but some box sets aren't always worth it. Some are. (Like Rappan Athuk Reloaded! :D)

*still wants a HC version of Scarred Lands Campaign setting by WotC*

I'm a big Greyhawk fan, but I wouldn't buy a new Greyhawk hardcover. I departed from Greyhawk canon long ago (before From the Ashes and all that), so I wouldn't be interested in the fluff, and I'm running C&C for Greyhawk, rather than 3E, so I wouldn't be interested in the crunch, either.

Like a ham sandwich perhaps Od?
Yup. :)

As for the boxed sets, the Wilderlands of High Fantasy really brought back this "treasure chest" feeling I almost had forgotten. You know, when you undo the wrapping and you just want to know what's inside the box? I'd like to see boxed sets come back more strongly on the market. I just like them on an organizational point of view too. If they are the same side as hardcovers, at least when standing up in a shelf, that'd be great too.

Wasn't there a study done that said that box sets never made enough money to really warrant making them? Wilderlands was done in a fairly limited release, no?

Yep. It was a fairly limited release. 2,000 copies, if memory serves?
As for the actual cost to produce a boxed set, I don't know about that. Where did you get that information? Which study are you referring to?

I don't know, that's why I'm asking!

I vaguely remember a study being done by WotC or some other company showing that, in general, box sets cost too much to make and, for their prices, didn't net enough profit. Now I could be imagining it, that's why I asked! :)

Even so, some box sets are worth it. Like I said, RAR is one of them. :D

Od,

I'm glad you like ham. :D

Phil,

Maybe you'd like Scarred Lands Campaign Setting as a Hardcover! ;)

Everything I've read about Rappan Athuk says to me that I won't like it at all. So I won't buy it, or use it.
