D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard

The latest playtest packet for One D&D has just landed, and features five classes (Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard) and the new Weapon Mastery system.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents the rules on the Weapon Mastery property, updates to weapons, new and revised spells, several new feats, and five classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest documents.

I may as well play Pathfinder.
I suggest waiting for the revised edition ;)

I know people have a ton of warlock complaints. My personal one is that Mystic Arcanum doesn't let you actually put the spell on your list to use, its just a 1/day thing. I HATED that about all the old invocations that did that, that's just too weak for an invocation slot. For pete's sake, at least let them add the spell to their list for general spellcasting if they want, its an Invocation slot!!!!!

My head hurts. At 45:21, he states as fact that people play Warlocks as melee characters, akin to Paladins and Rangers? What game does this dude work on again? Is he confusing 5e D&D with WoW Classic: Wrath of the Lich King?

He said, and I quote: "Many warlocks end up being melee focused." Which they do! Lots of warlocks are hexblades. It's a very popular gish build.

Crawford didn't say or imply that all warlocks were melee, or even most, just many. 100% accurate.

Reading a bit more to check out the fighter. I kind of feel like indomitable should just be "if you fail a save, choose to succeed instead" mostly because that will essentially be what it becomes, I might change it so that's how it works.

I'm not keen on the champion's adaptable victor (it's the sort of ability I'm not keen on for any class, though I could see it as a good option for a knowledge cleric) I'm fine with them being granted a skill, not so keen on them swapping out that skill every day. This subclass has also reminded me how much I hate the term heroic advantage, hope they come up with something better or just return to inspiration. In apite of that, I like the changes they've made to the champion.

Goblin Queen (She/Her/Hers)
It's the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan issue. The more time you spend there, the more damage you take. Spend an hour and you take more damage than you gain back from it after a while. DM is not "in control" of your choices, but it's a bad choice to make in the scenario.

And it doesn't need to be that poison gas. It could just be wandering monsters attack. Or a race against another group to get to the center of a labyrinth. Or any of dozens of things which make a short rest a bad choice.
Sure, sometimes there are scenarios where a short rest is more trouble than it’s worth (unless you just like… have a character in the party who knows Rope Trick), just as sometimes there are scenarios where a long rest is more trouble than it’s worth (unless you just like… have a character in the party who knows Tiny Hut). But I notice no one complains that the DM controls when wizards get their spells back.

Speculation Specialist Wizard
Tales of the Valiant has a feat that replicates spell schools if you and your DM prefer that.

That said, how many of those specialist subclasses ever got used? Half seems about right.

I don't think we'll see four subschool subclasses in the 2024 PHB. Warmage and bladesinger are tied with evoker for the most popular subclasses and I bet they get called up to the big show. The question is which other subclass makes the cut. (Fingers crossed for illusionist.)
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet (I'm only on page 14), but I remember it being mentioned in one of the videos that they were reworking the Necromancer and I would love to see that make the cut!

So this mere mortal with no power somehow not only gets into contact with not just one God-like being but SEVERAL and somehow has the clout to say "I'm going to dabble in all yours powers a bit and maybe choose one later." And these Beings are cool with that?

Those are some pretty laid back creatures.

"Can I just sale you a little bit of my soul for a few spell slots, with an option to buy later? You see, The Fae Queen is running a special next month and I don't want to commit until I see what she's offering on lay-a-way."
Yeah, the warlock has an identity crises. Lorewise a Warlock is more akin to a Cleric. They have a God/Patron that grants them powers. They don't get them by studying and trying to gain deep knowledge and understanding of magic. They get magic trough service pacts.

But the warlock mechanically just works like a worse wizard now. Instead of going to magic academy, they go to backalleys to learn some magic spells from unsavory folk like fae or devils.
