New Spell:Holy Bolt (New Version)(Edited)

Merlion

First Post
This is a new 1st level offensive spell I created for my Mystic class that I'm working on, I wanted to get everyones opnion on it

Holy Bolt
Evocation [Good]
Level: Clr 2, Good 2, Mys 1, Wiz/Sorc 2
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft +10ft/level)
Target: 1 or more creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex Half
Spell Resistance: Yes

This spell creates a bolt of holy energy that speeds from your hand to your targets. . Each bolt deals 1d8+1 points of damage.Only evil beings and undead are damaged by this spell. You have 1 bolt at 1st level, 2 at 3rd and an additional bolt for every three levels beyond 3rd (3 at 6th 4 at 9th and the maximum of 5 at 12th level).

the level listings show it as a cleric spell as well, which it would be in a standard campaign. and the wizard listing is because IMC wizards have some access to alignment oriented spells. Tell me what you think...and visit my Mystic thread and post your opnions..I'm updating it all the time.

It looks good, even though its not a good option for a 2 nd. level arcane spell (even though I see the reason in having alignment oriented spells be more difficult to cast for arcane classes).

I think that you could drop the Ranged Touch Attack roll without harming the consistency of the spell, making it a Clr 2 & Wiz/Sor 2 spell. Or, you could keep the Ranged Touch Attack and give the spell a 1 round Stunning effect on a failed Fort save (even though both an attack roll and a save can be annoying with a spell).

Be nice if you could heal your allies with it, ie- you have 3 missles you shoot 2 at a fallen ally, 1 at the ghoul who dropped him ;)

I thought about doing the stun thing but I am very wary of overpowering my new class. Making it 2nd level wouldnt work as they have Magic Missile as a second level spell and I just wanted them to have one decent offense spell at 1st level. But I believe I will implement the stun as you mentioned somewhere along the way. Thanks for the imput...now visit my Mystic thread!

Are there any Evocation[Good] spells? I don't recall seeing any such spells... if that's the case, then you may want to change it. Check the other spells that channel positive energy and see what their types are.

Later.

Even with its limitation to evil and undead creatures, it's a very good first-level spell. Clerics shouldn't have effective, low-level offensive spells like this one: arcane spellcasters should remain best at offensive magic; clerics already have more than enough going for them.

So limit it to the wizard/sorcerer list, or eliminate it entirely.

Holy Smite (Good 4) is an Evocation [Good] spell.

I agree with comrade raoul that it's probably too good for a 1st-level Cleric spell. Maybe let it do 1d8+level (max 1d8+5). It would then be on par with Inflict Light Wounds. It may even be better as you can attack at range and there is no save for half damage. The only thing you give up is that you can only affect evil creatures and undead, and some would argue that it isn't really a drawback.

Well i only even included the Cleric listing for normal campaigns...I designed this spell for the Mystic class in the campaign I am going to be running in which their is no Arcane/Divine magic split and no clerics.
And in normal DnD it probably wouldnt be allowed for Sorcerers and Wizards at all since it deals with alignment.

You just kind of contradicated yourself their...you said its probably to good and then suggested making it more powerful :D

Sorry, I didn't explain very clearly. I meant to let the spell create one bolt instead of multiple bolts, and that one bolt would do 1d8+level (max 1d8+5) damage.

However, if this is meant for a campaign where there is no arcane/divine magic split, it should be fine. In a campaign with clerics, perhaps it ought to be Clr 2.
