First Post
Ugh. I think i posted something but i cant find it so i probably didnt. Now i have to write those questions all over again. First,
I know someone already posted this but i cant find it, coz i dont know how to search teh forums. >.<
K. I wanted to know how to determine character spell save and spell resistance. I couldnt find it in the players handbook and im getting dm handbook tommorow. I rly want to get better at this game but i cant if i dont figure this out ill never even play a single game and im sure its fun.
Also, do paladins get caster levels? just an off topic question, i know i shouldnt go for paladin as my first coz its not a recomended first class... but whenever theres like an mmorpg or something i play as a paladin or the closest thing coz i like the combination of power, holyness, and leadership.
Moving right along, i need to know as well if theres a way to
A. Come back to life after uve died of old age
B. Be immortal (of old age, not violence, disease, or watever)
I also want some paladin builds. Ive made a total fool outta myself before when i didnt research a class before i played it. Here are my current stats

STR 17
DEX 11
CON 13
INT 10
WIS 15
CHA 13

i guess those are ok stats, are they for a paladin? coz i dont wanna scrap 'em and start all over coz my str is realy good.
whats the level cap?

So thats about it if anyone can help me please answer the questions in order... but if u dont its ok ill figure it out. Thanks for the help,

IM DESPERATE

Spell saves: some spells don't allow saves at all. Some do, and the spell description determines if it's a Reflex save (as in Fireball), a Fortitude save (as in Poison) or a Will save (as in Charm Person).

Spell Resistance: only some creatures (like older dragons, some demons, devils and celestials, dark elves) or some classes (like a Monk) get Spell Resistance.

Coming Back from Death by Old Age: Not usually. Some people argue that the Reincarnate spell puts you in a young adult body of your new race, but that's debatable.

Be Immortal: So far, the only races that have no finite lifespan (being capable of living forever unless killed by outside forces) are warforged (living constructs from the Eberron setting) and the killoren (fey creatures with a strong tie to nature, from the Races of the Wild book).

Level Cap: the Core rules go to 20th level (which is a BIG deal!), but the Epic Level Handbook has rules for playing at any level higher than 20.

Stats: Your Strength is really good, but a Paladin also needs a high Charisma. I'd swap your Charisma and Wisdom scores.

OT: I find it amusing that someone who's looking up paladin builds has, probably unintentionally, as their avatar the symbol of Bane, one of the LE gods from the Forgotten Realms. :)

Now to be actually useful. Your saves come in three categories, Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. Each of these are modified by your Con, Dex, and Wis, respectively. In order to ascertain your total modifier, you consult the chart that comes with each class.

Paladins are spellcasters unless using a variant rule.

See the attached SRD for paladin class. Pretty much all the specs needed are contained there including caster level.

And you need a better charisma - too many key paladin abilities are based on Charisma modifier (e.g., smite evil, divine grace (i.e., saving throw bonus), lay on hands, turn undead)

Spell saves: Paladins begin with Fort +2, Will +0, Ref +0. As others have said, high stat modifiers increase these saves. Con modifies Fortitude, Dex modifies Reflex, and Wis modifies Willpower. So your saves given the stats you have below at first level are: Fort +3, Will +2, Ref +0. Note: At 2nd-level paladin, you get to add your Charisma modify to your saves. Given your stats already posted, this will give you a bonus of +1 to each for a total at level 2 of: Fort +5, Will +3, Ref +1.

Spell Resistance: You don't have any. As a paladin you need a magic item to give it to you.

Dying of Old Age: Not that I can think of; once you are old, you die.
Immortality: There's certain classes and prestige classes that grant "timeless body," which allows you to ignore the game effects of aging until you die of old age. I don't think there is anything that let's you live forever, aside from something custom in your DM's campaign world.

If you can re-arrange your stats, swap your Wisdom for Charisma; it will be better in the long run (as Klaus suggests).

Builds: One popular paladin is to use either mounted combat line and a lance, if you have a chance to be outside a lot. If you are going to be in dungeon crawls a lot, you might be better off going with Power Attack and Divine Might (which is from the book called Complete Warrior); it let's you add your Cha bonus to damage for a round but it costs you a turning attempt.

Paladins are weak spell casters, but that's because they are all about smiting down evil and not so much about casting spells. Focus on spells to boost yourself (bless, protection from evil) and your allies.

Good luck!

yes: paladins do have a caster level = class level / 2.

if you are asking about how do you determine saves against spells cast at your paladin?
There are three saves, fortitude, reflex and will. The base is tied to your levels of classes. Add your constitution bonus to fort, dexterity bonus to reflex and your wisdom bonus to will. Sometimes there are other modifiers based on feats, race or class. To "make a save" roll 1d20 + the bonus for whatever type of save it is (fort, refl, will) and if you get higher than the save DC, you succede.

If you are asking about how you determine the saving throw DC others face against your paladins spells? The DC is 10 + spell level + wisdom modifier, sometimes with other modifiers based on feats, class, etc. Note that not very many paladin spells actually have saves.

As for suggested builds? I would do as the others suggest and swap charisma and wisdom. Charisma is more useful and the 13 wisdom will be enough to get all 4 levels of spells (assuming you drop one point in it as you level up).
