D&D 5E New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

WotC has posted a new Unearthed Arcana featuring the Glitchling race, the Fate domain, and a handful of backgrounds, feats and spells.

In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore D&D character options from across the multiverse. This playtest document presents the glitchling race; the Fate Domain cleric subclass; and the gate warden, giant foundling, planar philosopher, and rune carver backgrounds. Additionally, a collection of new feats provide links to giants and other primordial forces of the planes, while a selection of new spells highlight the power of fate and chance.

The addition of the free feat is clearly here for all and sundry. a key aspect will be working up the list of feats available to the (established/PHB) backgrounds. Skilled and Tough aren't enough. What about adding: Athlete, Charger, Defensive Duelist, Elemental Adept, Healer, Mounted Combatant, Skulker, Tavern Brawler. Let's get a wider range of feats in the game.

Yup, I expect as they start testing for the 2024 Core changes we will see more on this. Stuff like "Criminal gives Dungeon Delver" and so on.
Exactly. The default choices you see in the UAs are probably just there just to show the idea off. But DMs and what not can pretty much work on curated lists and there ya go. because, of course I am expecting WoTC to be WoTC and only offer options like "Tough" and "Skilled" and say eh, good enough.

No, I think they will provide specific Feats for the general Backgrounds at least in the new Core. But they want to nail down the idea first.

Type: Having a creature type of "Construct" could mess with certain spells and effects that only target Humanoids, but then they caveat around it with exceptions in their "living construct" ability, so it doesn't actually matter. I'm not sure why they bothered, but whatever. They're Constructs except when it's inconvenient, got it.
It's the only way they can get playable Constructs to be healable. If they weren't "Living Constructs" then they would have to make up a whole new set of healing spells for Constructs or be forced to admit that now a Healing Cantrip exists: Mending.

Folding feats into background is pretty neat, because it lets you have a fun extra level of customization at level 1, with the PHB feats being relatively simple most of the time, but you don't automatically need to commit to feats in the future of your character.

Okay, so the specialist rune-carver benefits a spellcaster more than a non-spellcaster. The idea of a dwarf fighter who knows rune magic, or a half-orc rogue who has learned an arcane secret, is always going to lag behind a wizard.
Augh...

Also, am I the only one who would like a rune carver to be able to just... put runes on his friends? You know, as a sort of support thing? All the rune magic we got so far is just personal stuff. It would be cool to be able to carve a protection rune on my buddy's armor too.
Don't really have a problem with the armor plating. Lots of people in this thread are really fixated on this, but I don't see any terrible issues with it. Like the aforementioned "I'm a Construct except when I'm not," this only matters if you want it to.
Honestly, it just shows how underwhelming other natural armor options are. Especially considering you can't enchant your own skin to get better bonuses as you level up. It's the other options that need a buff.
A reading of natural language makes the intent clear.
AUGH... 'natural language' is not that natural and it's a flimsy excuse for badly written rules.
