New version of Vorpal

I stand with Crothian on the issue of its enhancement price. +4 sounds good.

One other problem, with both wizards and kreynolds: (spelt it right this time) THERE IS NO SUCH SPELL AS DEATH SPELL! you oughta rewrite the prereqs.

Actually, I'm starting to agree with both of you. How about this? I really don't want to drop this enhancement below +5, and I really want this to be the most deadly weapon enhancement you can get, just like the original Vorpal. So, I'm thinkin' of leaving it at +5, and raising the damage even more, maybe x6 or x8. Actually, considering how nasty Vorpal used to be, I don't think that x8 would be that bad. What about you guys?

I like the x8 because that also brings the massive damage rule into play. So, you can get lucky and kill a very powerful thing with one shot if they miss their saving throw. I saw it happen once with a giant. The Barbarian's first hit was a crit, he did max damage with his great axe and the giant fumbled his fort save. I called him Giant Slayer after that. :)

x8 sounds good to me then. I'll let my group know and we'll get on with some playtesting. We don't use the massive damage rules though (I roll damage really well as a DM, so that's the main reason).

Why does who rolls damage effect the massive damage rule? I would think it'd be easier with you rolling the damge. They you can secretly roll the save and no one would realize if the attack was over 50 damage unless the thing died to early in the battle.

I don't worry about my players killing my monsters/NPCs really quickly. I worry about me killing my players really quickly, and with the way I roll as a DM (wish I rolled that well as a player), it is, statistically speaking, a nightmare if I use massive damage rules.

I don't mind the massive damage rules when I'm a player though.

Okay, that makes sense. remind me to never play in game you DM though, if you roll that well. :)

But who would ever play with a Vorpal Scythe?

If you are going to tie the enhancement triggering to critical hits, then the critical multiplier should factor in somewhere also.

Using your Vorpal, a scythe activates much less often than a falchion, but deals the same amount of damage from the enhancement.
