New Way to Gain Skill Points.

I was just thinking about a way to gain skill points. Sorta like skills go up based on how often you use the skill and on the skill itself, not just putting skill points in it after you level up. Has anyone out there got a system like this, or would like to take a shot a making one?

So, you would keep of tally of every skill used and how often. Would success matter? The more you use it, the more it goes up.

The problem with this is it is easily abused. You'd have to put some types of limits on it in allowing a certain skill to only improve so much, and also a limit on how many skills can be improved.

Quest for glory 5 comes to mind. need to get throw skill up? buy 100 daggers and throw them at a target until its max. repeat with all skills (don't always use daggers). another way to do this, is to make players put their skill points into the skills they have been using. if the adventures are out in the desert, can't put any ranks in swim. if the PC's are climbing mountains, make em put some ranks in climb

The obvious solution is to tick all skills that are used. When you level up you can only invest skillpoints in ticked skills. Unticked skills cost twice as much to raise (just as cross class skills does.)

If you get proper training in a certain skill (and supervision) you can invest in that skill.

Check out the Pendragon RPG.

It's skill system involves ticking skills as they are used, as Frostmarrow suggested, but to prevent abuse, you only get a tick when, in the DM's view, the skill is used in a meaningful/important way. So, your Rope use skill might get ticked if you are tying the knot which will have to bear the weight of the entire party as they clib down a pit, but not if you habitually bind-untie-and-bind-again the hands of every orc you kill, just for practice.
