Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently confirmed it in an interview. The full text of the article is over on IGN, but here's the relevant snippet:

This is refreshing news. All the moreso since it means that there will have to be controllers with something approximating the familar GameCube controller configuration, which helps to somewhat dispel rumors that the Revolution won't have controllers with anything familiar on them.

Yay! Sounds good.

To me any good Nintendo news is awesome. I've supported their company for almost 16 years now and I'm not even legal to drink. Crazyness but it does my heart good to see Nintendo do the smart thing here. Now I can still play Super Smash Bros Melee forever!

And my fav controllers are the small XBox ones, then the big XBox ones, then the GC ones, then the PS2 ones. The Dual Shocks are fine for like Final Fantasy and stuff but once you need anything even remotely resembling quick button pressing they feel way too flimsy for me.

And of course if you want to injure someone, the PS2 controller is almost useless. Xbox all the way....
If you're going to injure people, forget the controller and go straight for the system with a perfect handle: The Gamecube :)

I rather dislike the PS2 controller… The dual shock seems so poorly implemented; I love the Xbox small controllers but then again I really liked the Dreamcast controllers also. (I’m a big guy though, I can palm a basketball, so I’m sure everyone’s mileage differs greatly on this.)
Huh. Really? I quite like the PS style controllers. I think the DC controllers are the worst I have of all the systems I've played.

Xbox S-contollers (small ones) aren't bad too, though. I hate the big ones.

No way 8-bit Nintendo... Those corners be sharp. :uhoh:

As I said I have big hands... The DC controller is really comfortable in my hands and the analog controller was/is picture perfect. :)

Worse controller for me will always be the Atari 2600... My hand just hurts thinking about it.

I like all my buttons to be the same size and in nice little rows... Don't get me started on ergonomic keyboard. ;)
Heh, I don't know about ergonomic, but the Nintendo controller is supposed to be intuitive. I saw a thing before where they were talking about how the idea controller would have a joystick and a minimal amount of buttons. The controls should be intuitive, with the main button controlling almost everything and the auxilliary buttons being... well, auxilliary (in the GC's case, the A button is the main button since it's so honkin' huge compared to the rest).

That's what I've been trying to get at. It's a great system. When it first came out, a friend of mine would go to EB and just stare at the controller, going, "ooh," and "aah."
