No talk about "The Batman"?

About the Batman fighting power, let's not forget that the animated Batman is far from the über-martial artist he is in the comics. Even in TAS, Bats got punched and knocked by mere goons. It's just that he takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', he has the staying power of George Foreman! Without the belly, tho. :)
In the earlier stories, this is true. It was a reflection of the attempt to be similar in tone to the old Fliescher (sp?) Superman series from the 40s who couldn't fly and ran from bullets. However, as the series progressed, more and more of the late 80s and 90s aspect of The Batman character as being one of (if not the) best fighters in the world began to appear.

At any rate, I don't hate this newest series, but it possesses no where near the level of quality storytelling and concept as TAS... which, by the way, will have its third volume released in a couple weeks!

Well, I criticized TAS for that same aspect, so I'm not slamming something about the one that I'd allow in the other, merely because TAS had a much better story. ;) For me, Batman's martial arts background is as important to the character as his detective skills or his tragic origin. Though I recognize for others it's not so big a deal.

I suppose it's no coincidence that this is when I became a Batman fan, then.

One of my favorite scenes of Batman lore actually comes from the pages of JLA, when Prometheus invades the JLA's base. Batman tells Prometheus he's going to take him down, and Prometheus' response goes something along the lines of: "Don't be so arrogant! I am about to download from this disk straight into my cerebral cortex all the skill and technique of the 10 greatest martial artists of all time. And Batman? One of those martial artists...is you." There's a look of surprise on Batman's face, and the next time we see him, he's gotten his butt handed to him. His comment? "Well, that was humbling." :p

I have watched the first four episodes of The Batman now (Joker, Bane, Penguin and Man-Bat).

This show is really bad.

Batman's reliance on super-tech toys (the bat-suit and bat-jet-pack) is lame, diminishing the hero's self-reliance and ability to overcome challenges with his bat-brain.

The female police detective is the most unlikeable supporting character this side of... I frankly don't know who! And the cop that is Wayne's friend is a bit dull, too. Bullock and Gordon filled these positions much better.

The changes to the villains are lame. I mean, Man-Bat has always been this wonderfully tragic figure, a decent man trapped inside the form of a raving beast. To change Kirk Langstrom from that to a "Mwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaa!" type of villain is perhaps the worst retooling of a character I've seen! What a waste...

And bad on its own merits, I might add. Not just in comparison to TAS, as others assert.

Yes, you have what has these days become an almost obligatory role-reversal: a cocky, pushy female character that happens to be stronger, braver, and smarter than the dumb-as-bag-of-hammers male, who is the one who gets captured by the villain.

Oh, and I forgot to mention:

Four episodes so far and they are already recycling animation! I've seen the "Batman dons the suit inside the batmobile" sequence twice (iirc, Bane and Man-Bat episodes).

Kinda 'meh' for me. A little on the boxy side (Bat-Volvo?). And waaaaaaaa(...)aaaay too shiny. I'd be having flashbacks of Batman Forever/Batman & Robin if I hadn't obliterated those abominations from my brain.
