*Valan recovers from some of his wounds while the undead is harmed slightly.*

(OOC: Valan recovers 3 and KiteA takes 3, so we have one at 19 damage and one at 16

Quozen, Valan, (Dorrin), Gloria to act)

OOC: So nobody gets the two halves of the seventh point of healing?
(OOC: Not quite--this isn't a new phenomenon or a result of the halving; check all the other healing rolls made by people who did their own rolls compared to how much I said that person healed ;))

(OOC: Actually, that's not how attacking while counting as grappled works--you have to make an opposed check. Since I'm kind, I let you keep the 19. Since I'm also cruel, I'll tell you that the enemy then rolled high and beat you by exactly 1 :])

*Valan struggles to attack, but as he begins to pull his weapon arm free, the creature suddenly pulls together all of its strength to stop him.*

(OOC: Still need Quozen)

[sblock=OoC]I'm fine with that but I often get confused on grappling and I saw this in the SRD. Extra sentence for sake of reference.
[sblock]
"grapple check to activate the item.

Attack Your Opponent
You can make an attack with an unarmed strike, natural weapon, or light weapon against another character you are grappling. You take a -4 penalty on such attacks.

You can’t attack with two weapons while grappling, even if both are light weapons.

Cast a Spell"[/sblock]

Do I have to be grappling him? How is it determined if only one person is grappling?

Would I have to do Grapple damage? Perhaps what you were thinking?

[sblock]a successful grapple check to cast the spell.

Damage Your Opponent
While grappling, you can deal damage to your opponent equivalent to an unarmed strike. Make an opposed grapple check in place of an attack. If you win, you deal nonlethal damage as normal for your unarmed strike (1d3 points for Medium attackers or 1d2 points for Small attackers, plus Strength modifiers). If you want to deal lethal damage, you take a -4 penalty on your grapple check.

Exception: Monks deal more damage on an unarmed strike than other characters, and the damage is lethal. However, they can choose to deal their damage as nonlethal damage when grappling without taking the usual -4 penalty for changing lethal damage to nonlethal damage.

Draw a Light Weapon[/sblock]

If I'm just drawing this out I'm sorry. Not trying to question, just to understand.

Hate grappling. Hate grapplers more. Hate spawning grapplers spawning more grapplers most.[/sblock]

(OOC: The issue is that the critter is grappling you without itself being grappled by you. It gets a bunch of penalties for being melded such that outside attackers still get all the benefits they usually do for attacking a grappled enemy, but you have to establish a grapple first

So maybe you hate spawning grapplers spawning more grapplers who meld into you and don't initially count as grappled most ;)

Thanks WotC! Though actually it wasn't such a big deal in my playtest fights because there weren't so many poor rolls to begin)
