Then I had a player play one. Ye gads! What a pathetic class.

a SS/ barb did well in one of my games for a while. He used Druid buffs and a magiced stick to beat stuff. At the end of his run he was specializing in battlefield control, with a vigor for healing. Ironically he cast Lessor vigor on hie betrothed instead of himself before raging against a flightless dragon - she survived because of it, he died due to its lack.

I like the combination of prep and spontanious casting.

Im voting to get rid of a few stragglers - shukenja, totemist, knight; and maybe the alternate casters the weak shadowcaster and the binder (hard to work into non-core cosmology)

Sticking with my formula of Psi first then Incarn after that if they survive. I just don't see them as part of my concept of play. More power to you if you feel otherwise.

It is hard to guess what will be left, so I will just see what is left after my voting plan pans out before making an opinion.

I nuked Shugenja, but that was kind of a random choice. There are some classes I wouldn't play, and some I just don't know enough about (never even flipped through Magic of Incarnum, so kicking them off the island seems a bit overmuch), but I'm thinking my choices will be kind of blah until things I really like stand a high probability of getting voted off.

Howso? Because I've similar feelings towards it that you did before seeing it in play.

Part of it may be the player in question, because he tended to forget some abilities and didn't really bring out the flavor. Also, my game uses spontaneous divine casters (from UA), so the uniqueness of the spirit shaman's spells didn't really show. Those may have both led to a non-standard reflection of the shaman. From what I can extrapolate, though, I believe I'd feel the same with other circumstances.

The SS is one of those classes where many of the abilities rely on the GM putting in the right sorts of encounters, though. Like the ranger's Favored Enemy, the spirit shaman has quite a few toys that need fey or incorporeal critters to make it work. The main bad guys in my current campaign are psionic humans/elans and corporeal outsiders. The few times I put the character in his element (which usually took a special effort from me), he kicked butt and took names on a whole new level. Otherwise, he was rather bland and somewhat impotent.

I voted for the shugenja because I don't really get the oriental classes as a whole. For an Oriental setting, I'll get Oriental Adventures, bring back Al Qadim to support it if there's going to be oriental characters in core books.

EDIT: Just read my post again. Obviously it's not in a core book. But you know what I mean.

Hear hear. Lose the damn oriental classes. So sick of samurais and ninjas in fantasy games.

I voted off ninja, not because I'm opposed to 'eastern' classes (does the game have to be 'Euro'centric? mixing it up a bit can be fun IMO) but because I can't stand the mechanics of the CV version. Seriously, in what way exactly is sudden strike not a pathetic imitation of sneak attack? It sucks.
