non-martial monk

By the name of Mystic, Hermit, or something like that.

Any interest here in that kind of thing (i.e., Monk and/or Oathsworn minus most of their combat ability plus more 'mystical' abilities)?

It could be a kind of spiritual complement to Dr. Awkward's Bruiser class, or Hong's Martial Artist (both of which are more militant than the Monk or Oathsworn, in general).

Also, I like to do this with classes anyway (hence, my Templar and Priest, instead of just Cleric).

It's just an idea I've had swirling around in my mind the last couple of days. If anyone feels like posting views, suggestions or whatever, that would be great. Otherwise I'll just see what I can come up with over however long a time, when I have the opportunity. Collaboration is more efficient though. :)

Rokugan has a less martial Monk called Inkyo. Actually it's still quite a good combatant, but in theory you could spend all its bonus feats in certain supernatural abilities not necessarily related to fighting, or at least focus on defense.

For a completely non-martial contemplative kind of character, what about a flavor-modified Psion?

Nope, incorrect. Since when do Experts and Adepts have *any* of the class abilities of Monks? Also, this is to be a *PC* class. I didn't make the latter point clear enough, perhaps. . .

Indeed, that might not be too far off the mark, if at all. I was thinking about spell-like abilities (like a Warlock's, only not), or possibly psi-like abilities, but hey, actual psionics using PPs and such could be just the thing, alternatively.

All that I am contemplating here is a Monk variant (hella variant at that :D), that will provide a mystical counterpart to something like the Bruiser base class (basically a full-BAB, non-mystical Oathsworn variant by Dr. Awkward, here on EN World), for example. As I said. So for the record, there need also be no concerns as to how it will mesh or otherwise with any Monks wandering around - there won't be any Monks wandering around (in this context).

I hope it makes a little more sense this time around.

The best class for this kind of thing is the Anima from Elements of Magic II: Lyceian Arcana. It's designed for an alternate magic system, but it's a very cool class nonetheless. If you're looking for all kinds of supernatural abilities that are part of the character, Anima is great. Its primary use in my games is for NPCs who spend time meditating and possess all kinds of strange and exotic powers without being martial artists.

Thanks for the tipoff, genshou. It's a book I've been meaning to get around to picking up. One of these days. :)
