D&D 4E Not going to 4e

At the moment, it looks like I won't be switching.

Ah, but what to do then? Stick with 3.5e? Switch to a 3.75e, if such a thing exists? Switch to an entirely different game? Create my own system entirely? Stop gaming?

The thing is, there are sufficient problems with 3.5e that I was looking forward to 4e. Going forward, I don't see sticking with the game as it stands as a good option.

However, I rather doubt that 3.75e will ever actually happen. Even if it does, I suspect that the problems I see with the current game, and my preferred solutions to them, are unlikely to be the same problems and solutions seen by whoever it was that did develop 3.75e.

Writing my own system (even if it's heavily cribbed from 3.5e) sounds like an awful lot of work for a fairly minimal benefit.

Which leaves switching to another game entirely, or just dropping gaming. Neither of which is hugely appealing.

I will not be switching, based on everything I've heard so far. The mechanical changes sound like ones that I will not enjoy in my game.

Not switchiing to 4E -- if I ever run anything again, I'd like it to be B/X.
The breaking point for me was several things that they described as "problems" that would be "fixed."
1) "Wizard should never have to fall back on a dagger, staff, or crossbow"
2) "No more 'dead levels'"
3) "Paladins don't have to be LG"
4) "Playing a support character isn't fun"
5) "1st-level PCs should be 'heroes'", 'heroes' meaning super-tough

Any one of these changes would be enough for me to be not interested in running 4E. Taken together, they make me not even want to play it. It's clear from their design principles that the hobby has moved on.

Given that my group still plays 1E half-the-time, and only in the last year really switched over to 3.5 for the other half of the time we play, there is no incentive for us to switch to a new version of the game, so I am not going to switch to 4e.

I'm not ready now, and I don't think I will be for a long time, if at all. I have so much 3E stuff to explore and use it's silly to even contemplate moving on. And I don't have anyone excited about the prospect in any of my groups.

I also don't think 4E will be ready for me (in terms of solid computer support) for some time after initial release. So I'll definitely want to let WotC shake out the bugs for a bit. I will keep up with 4E news and try to read reviews and so forth out of academic curiosity.

While I am ready for a 4th edition, no one else in my gaming group is. They either don't want to spend the money to upgrade or don't see the need for something new. If wotc can't wow early adapters who will champion the new edition to their groups, they are going to have serious problems.

Most of the changes being made I do not like. Not the races but the mechanics, spreading out the levels, diluting the wizard class and getting rid of schools, unifying the class mechanics, dumping save or die. I just don't like it and so I won't be joining in on 4e, kind of like I dropped out of much of 2e.

Who knows maybe 5e will be better?

My stance on 4E has evolved through three stages so far.

I was at Gencon when they announced it, and it pissed me off - here I was, shelling out a lot of money to play 3.5 for four days, and they felt the need to get on a stage and tell me how the game I was playing sucked? That's how it seemed like, anyway, and the crappy PowerPoint presentation and the tons of unhappy booing fans really made it hard to feel that this new edition was going to something good.

Rational thought did take over eventually, though, and I basically decided that while WotC wasn't giving me any reasons to want to change, and I was perfectly happy playing 3.5, I'd wait to see what they had to offer. I figured I'd pick up the 4E PHB for the hell of it, just to show my support even if I wasn't that interested.

With the latest slew of previews coming out, though, I find myself at a point where not only 4E isn't offering me anything I want, but a lot of the changes are things I actively dislike and would never want in any game I played and ran. Anything is possible, but currently, I don't see any reason why I'd want to play 4E.

After playing star wars SAGA edition, there is no way I could play 3.5 ever again. I am anxiously waiting for 4th edition, liking all the crunch (till now) and most of the fluff (mostly pantheon, planar things, new devils and demons, lizard like race,... wizard traditions are just meh) . :D

I think you posted to the wrong thread, friend.... :p ;)

There was booing? Ouch. :\
