Seriously: prices go up over time. Paper is more expensive than it used to be.

This is correct. The new books are more expensive because of costs to produce and inflation, rather than any "money grab" on the part of WotC.

One might get more traction for a "money grab" complaint based on the Digital Initiative (although I feel it would need to be much more integral to the whole than it actually will be for this complaint to stick). Also, there is some traction to it from the "everything is core" statement, and more specifically the spreading of things that used to be core to the PHBII/DMGII/MMII (and perhaps III).

However, WotC is a business, and need to keep an eye on the bottom line. They are there to make money. While it would be nice for them to give us everything we want and could hope for for a nice $50 price tag, they wouldn't make any money doing that, D&D would be cancelled, and the game would be dead. Frankly, I'd rather they treated the business of RPG as a business, and make their money, so that in ten years we'll actually be able to find game groups.

I come here for news, rumors, and discussion.

You've given me neither of the former, and I'll be damned if I let you prohibit the latter.

Good gaming, -- N

That was the sticker price for Arcana Evolved, wasn't it? I remember feeling more than a little sticker shock at seeing that.

But AE was (and still is) a gorgeous book. Good paper, good art, good layout -- and the content wasn't so bad either. :) So it's possible to sell a $50 book and have it well received.

I seem to recall hearing that Monte Cook exceeded his sales expectations... but I don't know what those expectations were, or if they relate at all to 4e.

Cheers, -- N

My group has a total of 80+ years of D&D in us, altogether of course. We've moved on to each new D&D with enthusiam, and we've played the hell out of them..... until now. Not one of us is interested in 4E, not one... which surprises me. We're a pretty out there bunch, but universally we don't like anything we've read about 4E so far. We will not buy one thing from 4E, and we all feel that since WoTC is now overly corporate that they made this edition to not be At ALL compatible with older versions simply for money.... money grubbing bastards.

Or the could make 4e really different from older editions because lots of people bought older editions and, well, own older editions and don´t need "slightly revamped" older edition. And of course because they were thoroughly flamed to hell when they released a revision ("too few changes for a new edition / force me to buy new books / too much change to be the same edition").

.......

No, you´re probably right. It´s the corporate thing. It´s spreading like a virus, too. I feel much more corporate since loggin on to Gleemax. :D

I won't be moving to 4E. I may 'port' some of the feats and spells into a 3rd edition format/system, but I dislike the vast majority of the flavor changes that I've seen so far, and a good chunk of the mechanics that seems to play into this. It really doesn't feel like D&D to me.

Nifft, you must have missed my polite requests to other people earlier in this thread.

It is clearly not a thread for you, yet you persist in threadcrapping in it.

End result? Banned for a week. Behave yourself better in the future please.

Nope

Not only am I not going to 4th edition.. just reading about it makes me sort of angry.

Paladins who aren't lawful good?
Some crazy kiddie friendly WoW like casting system?

Not to mention Wizards put it's boot heel on the neck of a campaign setting I know and love (FR) and put a bullet in it's skull?
Anyone remember a little travesty by the name of Dragonlance 5th Age?

Heck I feel the beginnings of a decent backstory for a 1st level character coming on.

"No sir It wasn't orcs that killed my mother and ravaged my sisters... it was those damned developers!"
