D&D (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

If you don't want weapon masteries in D&D, you need to get all the people who like masteries to quit D&D! That way your opinion will be the majority and will then be the one catered too!

Hey people, did you know Level Up has cool stuff for martial characters? And more mechanical options for everyone? You should totally quit D&D and go play Level UP instead!

I'm fine with it but it's another layer of complication on top of feats not being optional.

Imho they're aiming 2024 at more experienced players. I have my suspicions why.

Stop channeling your inner @Micah Sweet! ;)

I've been asking it because they're terrible for the game in terms of design philosophy, not out fo some desire to make the game fast but boring.
Oh... right... :cautious:

As an Enworlder, the 2024 rules are no problem for us! Are not all Enworlders paragons of TTRPGs?

But what should we do with the weak, the non Enworlders, who are overwhelmed? Since most of you disagree with my philosophy of purging the weak so the strong can thrive, I guess we're gonna need to accommodate them somehow???

A starter game?
Tutorial encounters?
Musical numbers?

I find this subject so interesting because I play with brand new players ALL THE TIME and I STILL haven't noticed Weapon Masteries being cumbersome in any way - not as a time sink and not as a decision choke-point.

Maybe it's because I've never seen anyone care to use them ALL THE TIME. Sure, they're at-will, but that doesn't mean that you have to spam them. Also - maybe it's because I make all the character sheets and I include them with weapon attacks, right there on the sheet? IDK.

I'd love to watch a table that struggles with them in play, to see what's going on.

Because new players are both only new for a short while and aren't nearly as incapable of playing the game as 'experienced' players keep insisting they are and meanwhile you have to keep thing interesting for the people sticking with a game they're trying to stretch out into multiple decades?

Partly more.

1. Make the fame more complicated but you can buy this software to make it easier.

2. I suspect the game plateued around 2019 with Covid stimulus suger high.

Basically milk the whales and established players.

I am slow on the uptake. What are your suspicions?

Not being obtuse on purpose…just trying to follow along
