Nudge, Fudge, or Sludge?

Nudge and Sludge.

Ramp up the encounters so they get the idea that things are going to be much harder. Then when the players comment on the difficulty (pro or con, they'll say something about encounters that are +2 above their normal CR) you mention that, yes, it's hard and maybe that sword of giant slaying would help out.

My players found the empty room with the giant slaying sword but choose not to go inside it for whatever reason.....

Hopefully, they'll read that :D

I have been known to nudge once in a while, but I really try to keep it at a very bare minimum.

In my current campaign, the party has just complete the first region of the World's Largest Dungeon. They can now head north or east. To the north there's lots of juicy undead goodness and the to east, a goblin horde. However, the party at the moment doesn't have any magical weapons. Would make fighting the undead to the north extremely difficult. I had placed an ally in the region earlier - a Simurg from Dragon. I think the Simurg will have a previously unknown precognition ability and will give them a dire warning about heading north. The party doesn't really care one way or the other, so, I don't feel too badly steering them away. They can still go north, but at least my conciounce is clear. :)

I really don't need to worry about that because my PCs are immortal. If they weren't, I'd decide whether or not the encounter/adventure was "fair." If it was, I'd let the dice fall where they may. If not, I'd shift circumstances to their favor.

Good thing I always have a backup plan. Now if it works? That will be another story. Hey at least I am trying out creative options. Six months ago in our last campaign I would be crying out about our impending doom.
