Odd levels for fighters

Felon

First Post
Does anyone have any house rules that provide a fighter with a benefit at those awkward odd levels--you know, where taking a level of barbarian or ranger seems to grow increasingly harder for many an impatient PC to resist?

In particular, has anyone experimented with providing a fighter with a feat every level?

my friend and i are toying with the idea of giving half the "empty" levels a +1 dodge AC, and the other half gets +1 to one saving throw.
maybe fighter 3 should remain empty to so this only helps those that do more than a 4 level dip

We give fighters a feat at every level not divisible by 3 (so at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, etc.). It's only 3 extra feats overall (14 feats over the course of 20 levels instead of 11), but it seems to make continuing as a fighter more appealing. It hasn't been unbalancing at all in our campaigns (YMMV).

Or something like:
Select 2, one as primary and the other as secondary:
i)ranged weapons
ii)melee weapons
iii)dodge
iv)fighter skill

primary: you gain the bonus at 3rd, 7th, 11th, 15th, and 19th.
secondary: you gain the bonus at 5th, 9th, 13th, 17th

i) +1, +1, +2, +2, +2
ii) +1, +1, +2, +2, +2
iii) +1, +1, +2, +2, +2
iv) +2, +2, +4, +4, +4

On those odd levels, give a choice:

DR, AC (dodge), Save bonus (one save only), reduction to Armor Dex penalty... others possible.

IMO the bonus ought to be something that typical fighter feats do not address normally. The bonuses proposed to attacks are redundant with the Fighter's high BAB and weapon Focus/specialization feats, so I wouldn't grant those.

I agree, I would be far more interested in seeing something to help defensively. :)

good point, the choice proposed is for each level or for the overall advancement?
