Odd levels for fighters

I agree. Working out the Generic Fighter list for Even levels. This list should have the bulk of the feats that everyone seems to choose for fighters but remove some of the more specific feats that address certain paths (like archery feats or great cleave... basically put the root feats in the generic list, and the branch feats into the specific Track lists)

Some Tracks ideas (including the ideas presented by Sadrik):
Archer
Duelist 1h
Duelist 2h
Heavy Weaponer (great cleave/charge)
Pikeman (polearms, reach, defense vs charges)
Gladiator (exotic weapons, feints, strange tactics)
Commander/professional Soldier (leadership, tactical feats)
Knight
Wilderness Warrior (like a Ranger ought to be IMO)
Artillery/Siege Equipment
Tunnel Fighter
Giant Slayer/Dragon Slayer
Mage Hunter
Religous Warrior

Wouldn't a simpler solution be to simply have more mid-high level Fighter-specific feats?

Things like Armor Specialization, or Defensive Awareness, or other things that a fighter can do to increase his/her skill at arms?

Or does everyone think that the Fighter, like the Bard and 3.5 Ranger before it, has fallen victum to power creep?

The more "Fighter only" feats you put in there the more you have to go hmm, do I take this feat that is really powerful that only I can take or do I take something else. Then all fighters begin to start looking the same. I like fighters with a lot of variance personally. The fewer the "Fighter only" feats there are the better imo.

On a side tangent I thinkthe fighter only feats should be availiable to everyone... (the level requirment should be a BAB req,)

I personally like the idea of tracks for development of types of warriors. The fighter still has the option of using the feats gained every 3rd level (as all other classes) to choose the wily-nily feats that can differentiate the fighter from other warriors who follow the same track.

I too agree, that fighting feats in general should be able to be acquired by any class who chooses to take them (meeting requirements otherwise). The Fighter class in general was designed to be master of feats (and lots of them), just as Rogues (or experts) are designed to be masters of skills, Wizards are masters of Metamagic or Item Creation feats... Clerics are in there somewhere.

Regarding the Track/School method of Fighters. There needs to be some penalty mechanism built into the system for a Fighter who chooses to change the Track/School. Something like loss of last 'school' feat (permanently) as the cost of starting a new field of study.... Others may have other ideas for this problem.

I am the school of 'don't give fighters new abilities and feat' at every odd level, but throw them a bone so that they get something "cool" (or a space filler) every level just like most of them other classes. I am working on a supporting ability (that needs feats to empower it) that goes like this:

At 1st level of fighter and 2 levels after that, a fighter gains "Combat Surge 1/day" (that increases per day usage every 2 levels). These are surge of fighting power/warrior spirit that is used to power feats that seem almost magical (think toned down Psychic Warriors). This optional rule, as well as high level house feats, motivates a fighter to stick to his class all the way to level 20 and beyond.

Examples include: damage reduction equal to double class level against a crit (immediate effect of course), fast healing equal to lvl for 3 rounds during combat, +2 to hit and damage and +10 enhancement bonus to speed for 3 rounds, Karmic Strike like AoO against foes that hit you, Soul Strike:every hp=your level that you sacrifice you can bypass incorporeal miss chance and undead damage reduction with one attack, Bravery: negate fear attack (immune for 24 hours), etc. There are feats that boost the aforementioned effects.

If anyone can help me fine tune and round it out, I'd appreciate it a LOT! :p

What I've contemplated for the fighter was a bonus feat at all odd levels but restricting it to weapon proficiencies or skill based feats (i.e. skill focus, alertness. etc...). This gives them another little perk and it really shouldn't affect balance any. The only drawback I can really see is earlier access to some PRC's without havine to multiclass first.

The fighter needs nothing more than what it has. You guys are ruining it for everyone who takes this thread seriously and doesn't know better... like yourselves. Friggin PLAY a fighter in a group of PCs who know how to throw dice without referring to the books every 10 seconds and you might see where I'm coming from. This is rediculous. Everything about the fighter-end of this game is based on the fact that they have a "dead level" every other level, and a "fighter feat" every other level. This includes PrC qualifications, Epic levels, et al! Smearing Skill Focus, Dodge Bonuses, or anything else in those dead levels RUINS THE FIGHTER and diminishes you as a player. Get over it, the fighter is fine, and if you don't agree then you're probably just a munchkin.

Had to find something, eh Shatterstone? I find it hard to beleive that my non-accusatory tone would incite your reply. Unless I actually insult someone, please don't try to rope me in. I'm here for the same reason everyone else is--to voice my opinion. I'm glad that you can read between the lines, but count those who can't on one hand and I'll buy you dinner.
