Odd levels for fighters

=I happen to play single-class fighters all the time in a low-magic, standard point-buy world where there is no coming back from death. While we play strictly by the core rules, the empty levels are quite an annoyance. Since we don't use any PrC's, the fighters do tend to get one-dimensional over time. Without getting into the fighter vs. spellcaster argument, our fighters tend to turn from valuable members of the party into mere bodyguards for the spellcasters over time. Protecting the mages just long enough for them to cast some devastatingly powerful spell. However, the highest level we've played to is level 12, after that we tend to start a new campaign.
=IMO there is nothing wrong with tweaking any class , as long as it is not overbalancing. I haven't seen any suggestions here that would qualify as such. While others game differently from myself and my group (i.e. low vs. high magic, core rules or tweaked), I would never label them as 'munchkins' for it. I think that the term 'munchkin' is thrown around much to frequently on these boards.

The low magic comes from limiting the magical items available to players and in the world in general. Our DM refuses to change the available spells (except the coming back from the dead ones) because of the constant whining and complaining of our players who run nothing but spellcasters.

It sounds like your problems with the fighter are based on your DM. Maybe he should run a real low-magic campaign: no caster level above 5th or something.

Having been a DM myself for a couple of years, I don't think that the he's really the problem. I also don't see how limiting the spellcasters to 5th level is fair to them. While I don't particularly care for playing spellcasters myself, I think that the limiting of advancement in certain classes is too reminiscient of the problems back in 2nd ed. While I may support the limiting of available spells, I recognize that others may object to my opinion.

Well, you're either in a low magic game or you're not. What your describing just seems like a cheap DM--full spells to full spellcasters, no magic items--not a low magic game.

The fighter needs nothing more than what it has. You guys are ruining it for everyone who takes this thread seriously and doesn't know better... like yourselves. Friggin PLAY a fighter in a group of PCs who know how to throw dice without referring to the books every 10 seconds and you might see where I'm coming from. This is rediculous. Everything about the fighter-end of this game is based on the fact that they have a "dead level" every other level, and a "fighter feat" every other level. This includes PrC qualifications, Epic levels, et al! Smearing Skill Focus, Dodge Bonuses, or anything else in those dead levels RUINS THE FIGHTER and diminishes you as a player. Get over it, the fighter is fine, and if you don't agree then you're probably just a munchkin.

/puts on mod hat. .

Hey Baronovan, Try to keep in mind two things:

1) What you as a poster think is a non-accusatory tone may not convey that way over the internet. It is always better to err on the side of coaution. But in my opinion both as a poster and as a mod, the choice of language in this (and following posts) is definitely inflammatory.

2) If you don't like the suggestions being thrown around for the fighter because you think it is just fine the way it is (and I agree) then don't take part in the conversation. Obviously, the suggestions here are for people who have your opposite opinion, so why waste time getting your ire up?

Lastly, I will ask that you (and everyone else) take a deep breath before posting, esp. when it threatens to derail what is otherwise a nice calm thread of people brain-storming and saying how they handle things.

Consider this an official warning.

Thanks.

Damn, but it is a busy day for me. . .
