Olympics Talk: A brief discussion before it goes away

If NFL players get to play, Flag Football will be hilariously one sided.
be like the 90s with men's basketball, really wish the NFL would let you view the video here

U.S.A. vs. Italy Men's Flag Football Championship at 2022 World Games Highlights

Also makes me think about why they pulled softball...we dominated it on the women's side.

I enjoyed what I saw- only the medal rounds, unfortunately- and IMHO, the competition on the Men’s side was of higher overall quality than on the Women’s side.

Part of that is merely personal preferences, but there were certain moves that I’ve seen in competitions on YouTube that were entirely absent from the Olympic performances. In fairness, though, some of that was probably due to safety concerns and the materials used to construct the dance arena.

I don’t remember there being head slides and suicides, for instance.

Stiil, it was good enough on both sides that I’m optimistic about breaking’s Olympic future. A bit more publicity; more competition from the rest of the world will almost HAVE to increase just by force of sheer numbers. That’s probably The Plan…

I rather enjoyed the ones of this I caught (I have been mostly relying on youtube clips as it turned out the taekwondo viewing I was doing was a short lived free trial to get me to sign up for peacock).

Did anyone see the Australian Breaking news regarding Rachael Gunn aka B-girl Raygun, who pulled out some unique moves like kangaroo hopping and swimming on the ground to earn Zero points.

it was a bizarre performance and seemed to be a deliberate parody by the 36 yr old white woman doing her PHD in 'Dance and gender politics' - so was it Breaking or Performance art?
I tried to view it, but was largely unsuccessful.

Most of what I could find out there were videos about the performance that only included still shots. A Reddit thread claiming to have the performance video had the vid excised by the mods.

The one video I DID find was sped up to show the match in under 1 minute. Almost unwatchable. (Yes, I could have adjusted the playback speed, but didn’t feel like doing so.)

In that hyperspeed playback, I saw a few genuinely good moves and a sense of humor, but as a whole, it didn’t seem…cohesive. My guess is she’s probably pretty decent, but the pressure got to her and she had a bad day.

I referenced this in my post above.

I watched the whole thing. She was noticeably worse than many of the competitors. But nothing so bad that it deserves hate. Life is too short.

I have heard that her explanation is that she knew she was not as good, so she tried to do some different things. But it's not like that women who conned her way into the skiing at the last winter Olympics.

I both loved watching the breaking in the Olympics, and reject it as an Olympic sport.

Okay, I have to ask ... why?

I admit that I am open-minded about this. AFAIC, if people compete, then why not? And I think that some of the niche sports (or ... events if you prefer) are far more interesting than some of the other events that take more time.

In addition to the traditional standout sports (track & field), I find that the weird niche sports are usually the most interesting. I would much rather watch Breaking than Golf- if only because Golf is always on TV, and the best players don't care that much about the Olympics, while the Olympics is the biggest things for almost all these tiny sports.

(That said, I know someone who absolutely hates any sport that is scored on judging only, so I can understand that.)
