[OOC] Horror High - Freshman Year

Just a heads up, I get sort of giggly and squeamish with romance so I don't write it well. If I do it will probably seem really understated. I'll treat it as a learning opportunity if the wind blows that way, but don't expect much... Xo

I have no problem reading it though, so don't hold back for my sake.

I'm also terrible at writing romance- and at this point I see Tasha as more likely to be a matchmaker than a participant.

It is also likely that I am going to mix tropes/shows a bit, and sprinkle in a bit of Veronica Mars to go with the Buffy-ness; specifically, Tasha has an interest in secrets, and in finding things out- she might say she is interested in writing and journalism, but she really wants to be a private investigator (for now, at least).

In terms of gear, I think we might want to take into account the progress of technology since d20 Modern came out; cell phones, computers, and such are far more available than the book DCs might indicate, and most phones have cameras and GPS (even mine has those, and it is a bargain basement 'dumb phone'). It is also very likely that all students would have a laptop or tablet (Though these may be technically owned by the school). In more mundane terms, students would probably also have a local transit pass that covers bus and subway/light rail throughout the greater Boston area (again, probably issued by the school system). On the other hand, DCs for anything like weapons is likely to be a bit higher- though our miscreants might have an easier time of it.

Again, just throwing this stuff around. Feel free to rein me in if needed...

I'll have some more ideas and stuff up tonight, I hope...

This is also a horror themed setting so mass communication is a little harder/more expensive to come by since certain shadowy elements would rather certain pictures have a harder time of making it onto the internet. ;)

I was thinking of something along the lines of the quote from Aliens: "Maybe they don't show up on infra-red at all", in that certain shadowy evil things are (somehow) resistant to clear images being taken, a sort-of digital version of the way most humans edit ought things their minds can't admit to. It makes it all the more telling with the prevalence of phones and cameras when the first question is 'Why didn't you get a picture?" ("Well I did take a picture" "No, that's just a blurry smear- certainly not a perfect shot of a ravening werewolf") And, of course, the reliance on cell phones and instant communication makes it even more disturbing when they (at a critical moment) suddenly don't work... Again, just thinking out loud- but there is a reason why Tasha is developing her drawing skills...

Various free-form thoughts on a variety of stuff (s-blocked for your sanity)

1. [sblock= Romance/boys] Given her budding telepathy and California upbringing, Tasha has a little bit of SJW (Social Justice Warrior, but in a good way, and I'll keep it low key) in her mix, so her first thought towards an all-female group dealing with 'romance tropes' in high school is "Don't be so heteronormative". More amusingly, and more to the point, this means that "Boys are a Plot Device"- if only high school were really that easy... [/sblock]

2. [sblock= Old People, and 'the Old Country'] So if Francis and her mother have an interest in religious superstition and mythology, there is that a bit in common with Tasha- she shares such an interest with her maternal great-grandmother (still mostly lucid and spry for her age of 105, living in an assisted living facility in Brighton- she immigrated from Russia just after WW2, and is a wealth of tales from her homeland)- it is also likely that she has some of the same gifts that Tasha has (which may account for her still-sharp mind and how she survived WW2, among other things). Both countries likely share at least some history, and possibly bits of folklore and so on. Just means now Tasha has to learn Romanian, as well as Spanish... [/sblock]

3. [sblock= Tasha's references] Once we get going, I will probably put up another post in the RG to keep track of various references for Tasha- this is likely to include any interesting topics/info she has picked up (so I don't forget it), but will also likely include local color and such from Belmont/Boston, and a running list of her observations/t-shirt of the day/etc. I'll keep it s-blocked for clarity. If I get too deeply Boston, just let me know- I lived there for 12 years, still know many people there, and might be moving back someday (For instance, nerdy Tasha may spend time visiting Pandemonium Books and Games in Cambridge- it is a real, and awesome, place). Just FYI... [/sblock]

4. [sblock= Genre/tropes/tone] In addition to the previously-mentioned BtVS and Veronica Mars, I'll probably reference many 80s teen movies (many of which, sadly, I remember from the first time around). And given that Belmont (and eastern Massachusetts in general) is pretty squarely in the center of Lovecraft country, there may be some of those references as well. The Breakfast Club meets the Elder Gods or "you can take Detention or lose SAN, your choice"...
