Opinions, 3 dragons dead.

But *don't* share such exploits on these boards without expecting some indignation, frustration, and annoyance.

If I let little things like that faze me, I'd have given away my modem nine years ago....

Well, I just wanted to get some of your opinions. This Sunday my gaming group got together and half our part was missing. I had a lvl 10 rogue/assassin, a lvl 8 mage, a lvl 9 priest, and a level 7 ranger, lvl 2 fighter. They killed three blue dragons, (young adult CR10) and 2 Wyrmling dragons.

>snip<

Does it sound like great tactics and prep, or just a way overpowered party?

Neither. The party is reasonably potent and the dragons aren't. I'll never understand why some people think dragons are these all-powerful killing machines. Ancient dragons and up can be a handful but smaller dragons are not that dangerous as long as you know what you are facing and you aren't surprised.

Younger dragons have little if any SR, poor spell selections, and don't do all that much damage (relatively speaking). To top it all off, they need a lot of room to fight effectively and their breath weapons are easily countered once you know what you are facing and take protective measures.

Even older dragons are not that dangerous to a party of appropriate level. They are bigger and they hit harder, but so are the PCs and the dragon's spells are not much better. Some have a better SR which helps a bit, but on the whole, relatively speaking they are not even the most damgerous things of their CR you can run into. (And as I recall the designers fudged their CRs down to keep them competative.) Dragons really need minions and lots of them to keep people from getting too close to them and to draw attacks.

P.S. If you want to know real Dragonfear, try the old 2e Planescape Rust Dragons. I have never seen PCs run in terror like that in my entire life then when they ticked off a Great Wyrm rust dragon on Acheron. (Note: They didn't run because they were afraid for their lives. They ran because they were afraid for their stuff.)

I'm sure there are some people on this message board who are mourning the fact that you didn't.... ;) :D
OOOOoooohhh!!!
cut you ta da BONE, man! ROFL

(glad you liked the short bus reference...) ;)

at least the poster didn't have the audacity to come back and defend his ridiculous approach to dragons...

that's the only tuime where my dander goes up - when DM's are in denial.

And it's NOT just a river in Egypt, pal. ;)

LOL, ok, to answer a few thing. First, it is not a troll. That really was a typo.
I certainly did expect to be disagreed with. No problem on that. It was the insults I didn't like.
Now to the party. Actually I was wrong in a few things. The wizard was using a wand of magic missiles, 10th level. And yes he did have all thoes rings. They do have a lot more equipment then they should, and I admited as much. That is how I like it, and how they like it. We have a reat time. I have to beef up the threats.
The dragon tactics were not how I would normally play them, because they were compelled to protect a peice of treasure. I can not say more, because some of my players are going to be reading this, and I don't want them to know much.
The mage never shot a lightning bolt at the dragon. He was hit with a couple of fireballs.
The party really dosen't know how to min and max. Most of them don't have enough experience.
A protection electricity protects for quite a while, when the area is only a 5 foot line and the party is spread out. On top of that, the SR fo a young adult blue dragon is 19. The mage was level 8 with spell pen. That is a 9 to roll. The cleric lvl 8 but is a radient, so his damaging spells are +1 level, (he was using searing light). That is a ten. Not eally hard to make. The dragons attacks are bit for 2d6+6, claw for d8+3 tail slap d8+9. Stone skin took most of the hits. When it ran out, the mage had another. It casts as a lvl 3, not much there. I did not give it ALL of the feats. I did give it flyby though. Unfortunatley, it takes two round to turn around, because of the flying menuv. That was two round it was far enough to be hit by fireball spells, and the arrows. It needed to get close. The characters kept moving around. The radient (priest) had empowered healing. A empowered healing circle rocks...
The archer is the one who hurt him the most. Even when he was down to his +1 arrows. His damage for each was still +9 an arrow. Fireing four a round (and yes, he was taking an aoO. He did use a five foot step a couple of times, because the dragon landed ten feet away (so he could use his wing slap on other opponents)) The dragon had a AC of 26. The archer had a to hit of +19. Not ard to hit, even with secondary attacks. (9base, 4dex, 1 arrow, 1 focus, 2 bracers archery, 2 bow) Plus he critted a few times, and used the spell hunters mercy. (auto crit for next bow shot)
I know there was more I wanted to answer, but I forgot srry.

Friendly suggestion, Noretoc: quit while you're ahead. :)

(Yes, I know you're really more behind than ahead* right now, but let's pretend you're ahead, shall we?)

* Or should that be "more a behind than a head"?
