Opportunity Attacks

Monster A's turn. Take an opportunity attack.

Monster B's turn. Take an opportunity attack.

Monster C's turn. Take an opportunity attack.


One attack per turn. Three turns taken. Three attacks made.

So have I been running monsters incorrectly? If I have say 3 goblins that go at the same initiative, am I supposed to do each ones individual turn before starting the next ones? I've been mixing their actions together where I might move them then attack or move one then attack with the others.

I hope that makes sense.

Each creature gets their very own turn.

Each creatures turn is supposed to be completed, then the next creature goes.

You should be able to still do things how you were doing them, you just
  1. have the creature take it's turn
  2. move into position
  3. take a ready action to attack after its ally is in position.
 


And if said 'tank' was a Fighter, that's three monsters who never even got close to the not-Fighter.

Is that right? We have had a tough time deciding if the Fighter's ability to stop movement with an OA works like this or not. Right now one of my DMs is saying it doesn't and the other is saying it does :shrug:
 

Am I right in rolling a single initiative for a type of monster? Or should they each have their own?

That is a good way to speed up combat and it helps you keep better track of which monsters have gone. It's even suggested in the DMG. You are suppose to do one at a time. There is nothing stopping you from using tactics to ready an attack until the other monsters in the group get into position. Since they all go on the same initiative it will not really change their initiative order.

A fighter's Opportunity Attack stops a creature on a hit, and it can move no further as part of that action. If the creature still has unspent actions which could be used for movement, it can spend them to move on, and the fighter cannot attack it again, since he's already used an Opportunity Action on its turn.

Note that the fighter's Immediate Interrupt attack against an adjacent marked opponent which shifts or attacks another target is not an Opportunity Attack. He neither gains his Wisdom bonus to the attack nor stops the target's movement if he hits.

It does for that movement action.

This is not the same as the attack gotten by Combat Challenge.

And notice, that if the monster was charging past the Fighter, the chances of that monster getting anything else done that turn is almost 0
