Opt-in or Opt-out?

I think the rules have to be presented clearly enough that one can opt into them.

However, all the rules and main variations on class structures should be presented from the first, so that all of can indeed opt for our favourite stuff.

For example, I want to see chapters for 4th edition style fighters, wizards, et cetera with powers at least up to 10th level. I do not want to have to buy a separate book just to use Powers.

Likewise, I want a few of the more interesting classes and races included in the first book. Not just the same old stuff from 1976, although I want that too. Let us see some dragonborn, tieflings, warlords and avengers.

I'm definitely agree that Opt-In is the best option. However, I don't think everything is going to be that way. I expect that skills will be core, and you'd have to Opt-Out.

I'm betting that Vancian magic will be core, as well, although there might be an easy alternative. Basically, pick your poison between the two core options. If done right, you could pick one, or both, or opt-out of both of them and select one of the other magic modules.

I'm hoping that Rituals will be core, but that they are done better.

Feats will likely be Opt-In. Alignment too.

Powers, I'd prefer to see on the cutting room floor, but I suspect it will be an opt-in choice. It better not be an opt-out choice or I'm going to be pissed!

I hate 4E's power structure.

But, it has to be an option for 4E fans.

I'm hoping that negative racial modifiers are an opt-in choice. I prefer the old way.

If THAC0 is going to be an opt-in choice, it will make the old school gamers very happy.

I can't think of anything else right now.
