Order of the Stick #407!

Does it matter?
We ARE in the Year of the Boar/Pig, hence the question if the pig shouldn't be on the top of the ring. But like I posted earlier, the Dragon is the leader of the Twelve Gods of the South (as seen in the crayon "Origin of Snarl" strips).

That won't stop him, it'll merely impose a punishment should he break the injunction.

Oh, I fully expected her to fall, but that's not to say you couldn't rationalize a plausible excuse for her not falling... And besides, it's kind of fun argruing the other side of the coin when everyone else is so damn certain of the outcome. ;)

Probably not. It was a Mark of Justice applied by one of Shojo's clerics, I believe.

IIRC, isn't the punishment death? That might give Belkar some pause.

You don't just become a blackguard from doing something to lose your paladinhood.

If she becomes a blackguard I will be disapointed. I have found the entire Miko storyline to be just blah.

Agreed. The whole idea is that she fell from grace because she thought she was right and everyone else was wrong.

Having her become a Blackguard would require her to give up, just say 'screw it' and give over to evil ... which would be totally out of character.

Sort of like the idea of her somehow teaming up with Xykon. Just because she's not a paladin any more doesn't mean she'd suddenly pitch in with the people she's been dead set against the entire time - including the reason for why she fell.

If she ends up going down either route I'll be pretty disappointed unless it's handled very well.

Technically, it's still the Year of the Dog. The Year of the Pig doesn't begin until the first day of the Lunar New Year, next month (18 Feb).

I'm confused. Why would anyone expect anything different? Was someone silly enough to suggest that if Shojo got raised it would make it okay, or something like that?
In answer to this question, I am refering to a hotly contested thread concerning alignment. If you wish to avoid a discussion of morality, don't read the spoiler text. :)

[sblock]There was an argument on a thread a while ago which weighed morality based upon intent, act and consequence. Some held that an act was evil if the intent and the act were evil, others discounted intent and held consequences to be of the most import. One example given was a woodsman cutting down a tree which fell upon, and killed, a child. The "consequence basis of morality" held that because an evil result came from cutting down the tree, then the action of cutting was evil.

In this strip, the consequence of Shojo dying does not occur until after the withdrawl of grace, so it is not his death that makes Miko's act evil. This strip seems to support the argument that intent and action are the more important factors in determining an action's morality.[/sblock]

I'm sure that technically, it's neither January nor February in the OotS world. :)

Okay, four of the gods are facing clockwise - Rabbit, Snake, Monkey, and Rooster. The others are facing counterclockwise.

Does this indicate disagreement among the gods as to her punishment? Or am I reading way too much into the artwork?

A bit, yeah.

Although I do think it's significant that the Boar is the only one with (o0) eyes. At a guess either because it's his year or he's Mikos patron/astrological god. As I mentioned above...
