Yeah, that's just what he needs. His first drug conviction.

a significant bundle of envelopes addressed to your parents and grandparents, wiht postage attached.

phone calls are immediate and email is neat, but a handwritten note form college frequently means a lot more to these folks.

good project, good for oyu :)

I'll have to suggest you not put in something that antoher poster has mentioned. Caffiene tablets. Lastest studies I've heard of show that, for academic purpopses, these things are worse than useless. Caffiene may keep you awake, but it doesn't improve your mind's condition for retention of information. If you need caffiene to stay awake for studying or class, then you might as well just sleep.

Well, when Bagpuss mentioned morning lectures, I have a sneaking suspicion he was suggesting caffene merely for the purposes of turning up, rather than learning.

And they are also good for parties, as he said.

Various toiletries, like deoderant. "Trial packs" of things like toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Small black plastic comb that you can put in a pocket, maybe a pocket mirror as well. I feel lost now that I've misplaced mine.

I also love the idea of the pre-postaged pre-addressed envelopes! Tres cool. In addition to that, some more blank envelopes and non-pre-applied postage, 'cuz I know I never have any when I need it.

Free AOL CD, for use as a drink coaster! Just throw it in for kicks!

For a can opener, I would suggest one of those folding military units found at most any Army/Navy store. While there, you can pick up many useful items. One of those Super Leatherman tools has just about everything. In addition to what others have said:

neosporin
safety pins
knife sharpener
mag-lite (already mentioned, but a good idea, you never know when you may need to find something in the dark or scare someone off)
double-sided 3M tape for hanging stuff on the wall
hot plate, or coffee warmer
Wet Ones to clean your hands anytime
phone card
roll of quarters for laundry

Vitamin B tablets are much better (I use to do Berrocca and V (a Taurean 'Energy Drink') if I had to drive home (400 Km from College) after 3 nights no sleep - they were great:D

A really really warm jacket (that can double for a sleeping bag)

Some foot powder and advise him NOT to shower in any kind of communal shower unless he enjoys tinea

extra underwear

extra pair of sneakers

oh and as indicated above - a Car is really cool too:D
