[OT] Ben Stein and Evercrack

As a parent, this kind of irresponsible behavior makes me very, very angry.

My apologies to Morrus and the moderators if this is too political, but it really hit a nerve.

If Ben Stein wanted to do the right thing and be a decent, caring parent like the rest of us strive to be, he would have laid down the law and pulled the plug on the game, end of story. Instead, he takes the easy way out and packs his kid off to boarding school and makes it somebody else's problem. So typical of the 70's "Me" generation and the generations since - "You raise my child for me because I can't be bothered. I'm too wrapped up in me." I'm so glad not to be part of that f'd up belief system.

But I'm really not surprised here. Ben Stein is a pseudointellectual self-important facist who used to write speeches for Nixon. As a humorist he is sophomoric at best. And his tacky game show only gave away $5,000 to boot! Give me Regis any day! :)

Not really. I think what it does is show us something about Ben Stein. His son needed more than to just have his computer taken from him. His son would have just spent all his time at his friends or done something similar to get around the problem.

What his son needed was a father who could spend time with him. Ben though didnt have time to be a Dad, so instead he shipped his son off to a school that could watch his son 24/7 and keep him off the game because Ben was too busy or not interested enough to put that much effort into his son himself.

I think that is pretty simple armchair quarterbacking.

I think he made a very difficult choice that clearly worked. Trying to force a parent of a teenager in modern America to be a full time warden for their child once that child has chosen to defy the parent is an absurd expectation. Maybe some big mistakes were made along the way, but both the parents and the child made sacrifices in the end and it appears to have worked out. I think that America has a much bigger problem with "don't care enough" parents who would never be willing to make this difficult choice that Ben made.

evercrack it is, but do we really need "concerned moms" trying to shut it down? (bad news for the RPG industry if they succeed, cuz you know where the next stop is). you know once they get the celebrities talking, that's trouble.

I think you need to go back a re-read the interview. Especially the last part. He goes out of his way to NOT call for "shutting it down".

What a load of crap!!!!

Explain how that gives you the authority to throw around inflammatory terms that you can't even spell.

I don't care if you raised the Harlem Boys Choir by yourself. A load of crap is a load of crap.

First off, I have no idea what part of what I said you think is a "load of crap".

And on a lighter note, what did I spell wrong?

The only load of crap in this thread is your crap filled tone while posting. Take that load somewhere else unless you can discuss things with at least a modest amount of class and or intelligence.

I have to admit I'm amazed how wrong this is and you can't see it.

Doesn't *anybody* take responsibility for their children anymore?

Facist is not a word.

A fascist is a person who believes in

"A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism. "

It is also a term frequently thrown around liberally (pun intended) to defame someone without regard to any connection between its true meaning and the beliefs of the target.

The term psuedo-intellectual also demonstrates either simple slander or ingnorance. I am assuming the former.

I summarized my view on the specific situation in a prior post.
