[OT] Best music to listen to when depressed

Don't know if it's been sad before anywhere in this thread but even if so it deserves repeating

Sit down and listen to the entire Stabing Westward Darkest Days album. By the end of that you'll probably have killed yourself.

If you are depressed for a reason (read boy or girl) nothing beats Pretty Hate Machine with Nine Inch Nails. Ringfinger is a great song with a nice message in time such as those.

ringfinger
promise carved in stone
deeper than the sea
ringfinger
sever flesh and bone
and offer it to me

-That Trent Reznor dude knows how to wallow.

I was just getting ready to trip cuz nobody mentioned NIN. If you want depression go there, any of the albums will do you.

A little Type O Negative never hurt anyone either. Specifically October Rust.

And if it's about a woman stay away from Dokken. Run away, as fast as you can. I know he's cheese metal but man that dude has been dumped on more than anyone else in the history of the world. Or so his music will make you think.

Wow! This is a great topic!

Most of the ones I might have contributed have already gone by, but when I get depressed, I also enjoy a little Savatage. Especially their album "Handful of Rain", which they came out with just after their guitarist died. Very sad. If you're not familiar with Savatage, they are a sort of heavy metal rock band, but they also have a pianist, which makes for an ecclectic sort of sound. With Christmas having just passed not too long ago, if you're familiar with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, this is the same people.

Good depression music...

Pink Floyd
Judas Priest (anything before 1978)
The Doors
The Mondays
Pink Floyd
Bob Dylan
Tool
Johny Cash

oh and Pink Floyd

Tiered levels

Cheer-ups: The Sugarcubes (any); Stone Roses (1st album); Pixies (esp. Surfer Rosa); Revolting Cocks; and, of course, The The (find me someone who can't possibly cheer up to "Uncertain Smile").

Moodier territory: Pink Floyd (Animals is my personal fave); Spiritualized; Tom Waits; the Velvet Underground; Bauhaus; Ministry (pre-sludge); Curve.

Lock up the razors!: The Cure ("I can never say no to anyone but you"); Joy Division ("I've walked on water & run through fire/Can't seem to feel it anymore"); Swans; Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

And, no, my calendar doesn't pass 1989...

Ha! Better yet, go out and rent "Pink Floyd The Wall" movie and see the pain and anguish as well as hear it. Get through that movie and your problems will seem like a trip to Disney. But get rid of all the razors and drugs in the house before watching it though...

Let's see... I tend to be more of a wallowist, but I do like a little rage and fun too, although looking below, I think I might be a bit of a masochist... So:

Soul Asylum, Grave Dancers Union

Disturbed, The Sickness

Counting Crows, August and Everything After...

Boys II Men, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday..." (The song from II)

Spin Doctors, Pocketfull of Kryptonite

Ace of Base, The Sign (I don't know why, but it always helps.)

Hootie & the Blowfish, Cracked Rear View

Heh, it looks like I haven't been depressed since the early 90's. :D

Let's see: I've always found that Ozzy Osborne's "Suicide Solution" was a real Pick-me-up :) (As in "pick me up and throw me off the side of the balcony."

Some very good country music can be found in the band Kane (lead singer Christian Kane - very, very good stuff.) His song "Chase" is good for a "lost opportunity in love" kind of song.

Oh, yeah... Channeling Jay and Silent Bob for a minute here... Pink Floyd, Pink Floyd, Pink MOTHER----ING Floyd.

Linkin Park has some good hard-rock "I'm pissed off" kind of songs. "Doesn't Even Matter" is quite good. In the same vein, Rob Zombie is a good choice.

As for pick-me-up:
Anything from Charlie Daniels, because the man doesn't know what the word "Slow" means;
Aerosmith (especially their latest single "Just Push Play");
I don't know why, but anything from AC/DC cheers me up;
and if you ever liked the movie, just Please do yourself a favor and pick up the Jay and Silent Bob Strike back soundtrack, because that thing will leave you laughing.

I hope you can overcome your feelings, and that some of these choices help! :)
