Sorry the spam the boards with this...but since myself and my fiancee are heading down to San Antonio next weekend after our wedding for a short honeymoon..

I thought I would petition people here on the boards for restaurant advice. I'm the red meat guy, she's the poulty girl. We both fish.

She's not crazy about Mexican Food...but otherwise it's all good.

Any ideas?

Try The Republic of Texas. They have great food (stuff you'll both eat, if my memory serves me correctly) and you can order a HUGE margarita (definitely to share) so big that you can take the glass home and use it as a candy dish...or fish tank. :)

Can't help you with the restaurant choices but I will extend a...

:) Congrats to Cedric! :)

...on your new union... :D

The stricture against Tex-mex is really harsh. San Antonio has some amazing restaurants in that tradition. I can't imagine living in Texas without eating tamales at every possible opportunity. It may be that if you shop around and find places that don't fit your prior experience with Tex-Mex you can find something that will please you both and take advantage of the local area.

That being said, San Antonio actually has some pretty good Italian food, most of it is kind of chintzy, San Antonio is the home of the original Romano's Macaroni Grill, but there are also some really great places supported by the fairly sizeable and proud native Italian community. There's a really great deli I'm trying to remember the name of... ...if I find it I'll get back to you.

HEB is a great grocery store chain. The largier fancier ones offer an amazing selection for Texas chains, and feature things like Valet parking and in store samples of roasted Brie in raspberry Chipotle sauce.

I can't visit them anymore, since I discovered that I would easily drop $70 any time I walked in there, and that half of that would be spent on products from their famed wall o' cheeses.

If you have stronger will power you will probably enjoy it.

There's also good barbecue and breakfasting places. Outside of town is great German food.

While this isn't eatery advice, consider heading over to New Braunfels and hitting the Guadalupe River on an inner tube. My wife and I did that on our honeymoon, which was basically a leisurely drive from Houston to El Paso (to visit my aged grandmother) up to Carlsbad to see the caverns and then back down through the Panhandle to Houston. :D

Head to the Riverwalk and you can't go wrong. It's one of the major attractions of downtown San Antonio, probably second only to the Alamo. The Riverwalk is lined with restaurants of all types, shops and bars. Sure it can be touristy and sometimes crowded, but it's still beautiful and varied enough to have something for everyone.

If you like hamburgers I would recomend Bobby J's just out side loop 1604 at 13247 Bandera Road Northwest San Antonio. They also have some very good chicken sandwitchs. Mencius at 7959 Fredericksburg Road and Taste of Asia (also serves Vietnamese) 300 West Bitters are good chinese resturants. Kabuki Japanese Restaurant 15909 San Pedro Ave Ste 100 is very good a little pricey but well worth the vist. If you go get the table service rather than the steack house, which is very good but not quiet the same. The San Antonio Express has a list of restraunts in it's weekender section on fridays sorted by cuisine with ratings and price range. Is your are looking for any specific types of restrants just post and I will try to help you out. Oh and Congratulations!

I'll second both the Riverwalk (and you'll find something good to eat just wandering around, and enjoy yourself in the meantime. For a preview, rent that old movie Cloak and Dagger which was mostly filmed on the San Antone Riverwalk) and I'll also second New Braunfels as a great place to visit (the river is fun, but Schlitterbahn is quite likely the best waterpark on the planet.)

Man, this makes me miss Texas. I grew up there and lived there until three years ago -- more than 25 years. Although we've got great weather this time of year in Michigan! :)
