pretty cool, huh? let's not all jump to conclusions, what is important here is that no gnomes were hurt in making that link.

Looks like a child's mummified body to me. The wrists lie at about the same place mine do when I lay down, and I've got pretty short arms (not freakishly, but it is noticible if you're looking for it), so I have to believe that the "elongated arms" is an optical illusion caused be how thin they are due to the mummification.

The large eye sockets are probably partially illusory -- feel the bones around your eyes and compare that to how big your eyes appear, visually.

The other factor is that, IIRC, human eyes do not grow significantly from birth to adulthood, so they really are "disproportionately large" for an adult, but not a child. One of the main characteristics of baby animals is their large eyes. Whether it's children, puppy-dogs, or baby seals, immature critters have, relatively speaking, larger eyes than adults do.

I'm not an MD (not even remotely), but I don't see anything suggestive about the mummy in the picture.

I am on my way to being an MD, and a pediatrician at that. i've seen lots of dead bodies, skeletons, and so forth of all ages. there are quite alot of anamolies in that pic.

one thing to look at is the head shape. ok, for it to have that shape it has to be fairly young.

that doesn't explain why the arm bones look a bit more than primarily ossified and that they are quite lengthy.

anyway, for more fun like this, visit http://www.starchildproject.com

note: that is a disturbing link to some.

Hmm...

Still don't see what you're saying about the arms. Lengthwise, they seem almost identical (proportionately) to mine. Elbow about two ribs from the bottom of the ribcage and wrist at or slightly above the pelvic area/hip.

Like I said before, I've got pretty short arms. My wife is about 5" shorter than me and her arms (and legs) are basically the same length. I don't see how this mummy has elongated arms if that's true.

Maybe I'm just being dense. Could you elaborate on what makes them odd? Remember, I'm no MD, so keep the words short. :)

The odd thing is that it's apparently an infant with those proportions. You are an adult, not an infant, and shouldn't expect an infant's skeleton to have the same proportions as yours.

Ah. I'll have to bring my 3 mo old to the computer when she gets back from the store with Mommy.

I guess I figured that the proportions would be pretty much the same.
